The School: Oasis Academy Byron

Oasis Academy Byron, based in the London Borough of Croydon, are in their 4th year of working with Enabling Enterprise. Previously, students have been busy developing their Enterprise Skills by completing the ‘Future Transport‘ Challenge Day and, most recently, put their Using Imagination skills to the test when creating a new computer game which was set in their very school.

Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for these Year 6 students to hone their communication skills of Listening Carefully and Sharing Ideas in an inspiring workplace as they entered the world of law!

The Business: Gowling WLG

Gowling WLG is a Global 100 legal practice, with over 1,400 legal professionals and a range of dedicated business support teams across 18 cities in the UK, Canada, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. They work across a wide range of legal sectors, with clients including Peugeot, Sainsburys and the British Government. Today, students were very lucky to be joined by Lydia, Allie, Gordon, Serena, Hilary, Dan and Alice, who work in a wide range of roles and departments within Gowling, including a trainee solicitor, PA and lawyers of international disputes and trading laws and standards.

The Challenge: Tour the Law

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Enterprise Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the premises, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of law and within a large organisation, each playing a vital role in the business’ success. From the catering team and reception staff to the photocopying room and librarians, each explained what skills they needed to use to get their jobs done. With a fantastic introduction to law and a first-hand taste of legal professionals in action, the teams were ready for their challenge!

Taking on the role of Lawyers, students explored two different areas of law, Criminal and Business, through separate cases designed to put their Problem Solving skills to the test. The first case saw them review police evidence and then play the part of a defence team, building a case for their client. In the second task, the teams of students acted as mediators in a business merger, finding different possible solutions and considering the pros and cons of each to ensure all parties were satisfied. Their Staying Positive skills were really being stretched as had to compromise, negotiate and problem-solve to reach a decision in time!
Finally, students’ Sharing Ideas skills were put to the test as the day culminated with each team presenting their work to a panel of professional judges. The judges were blown away by each student’s confidence to stand up and present their ideas clearly to a large audience and, reflecting on the day as a whole, commended the teams’ ability to listen to each other and work together.

What they said:

  • “The skill we are proudest of today is Sharing Ideas because we all contributed and had a chance to speak.” – Student, Oasis Academy Byron
  • “We love Enabling Enterprise, absolutely love it. It’s amazing to be able to bring the kids somewhere like this, with a view like this. It’s so inspiring.” – Teacher, Oasis Academy Byron
  • “I think it’s been great. It’s really interesting to see what you do through the eyes of a child. It’s so refreshing and such a positive burst of energy.” – Volunteer, Gowling WLG
  • “The best example of how we showed compromise is when we worked together to give our ideas and then chose the best ones as a team” – Student, Oasis Academy Byron
