The School:

Friern Barnet are in their 6th year working with Enabling Enterprise. Back in school, students have been busy developing their Enterprise Skills by taking part in several Challenge Days, including ‘Business in a Day‘ this academic year. Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 10 to put their Staying Positive and Problem Solving skills to the test with the support from professional business volunteers.

The Business:

Jones Lang LaSalle Incorporated or JLL is a professional services and investment management company specialising in real estate. JLL employ more than 58,000 people in more than 1,000 locations in 80 countries. Alongside construction, development and property management, JLL also offers a range of financial services.

The Challenge: Decisive Developers

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Enterprise Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the premises, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of construction, plus look around the impressive working space at JLL. They were able to explore the communal spaces as well as the sustainable features throughout the building which helped them to come up with ideas later in the day.
Taking on the role of Developers, students were then challenged to apply their Problem Solving skills to establish on which site to choose to build their new tall building. Taking the location and needs of the community on board, teams then worked together to build a model of the tower using limited materials. During the build, the teams’ Staying Positive skills were put to the test as new challenges arose, which put the developers’ budgets under strain.
The day culminated in teams pitching their plan for development to the judges, who posed as local and new residents, to see if their building was suitable for construction.

What they said:

  • “I was so impressed with the way in which they adapted throughout the day to all the challenges thrown at them!” – Teacher
  • “The students were all extremely engaged and inclusive of others – their teamwork was very impressive” – Volunteer
  • “Some people told us that we couldn’t build the tower the way we wanted to, but we came up with new solutions, stayed positive and persevered until we succeeded ” – Student
  • “Our tower wasn’t very stable at the start of the task so we had to use our problem solving skills to overcome that” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
