The School:

From the London Borough of Ealing, John Perryn Primary are in their fifth year of working with Enabling Enterprise. Back in school, students have been busy developing their Enterprise Skills by successfully running Lesson-Time Projects as well as taking part in whole-school Challenge Days where they designed an imaginative range of futuristic vehicles, or when they investigated a mysterious Crime Scene in school. Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 5 to put their Sharing Ideas skills to the test with the support from professional business volunteers.

The Business:

Guy’s and St Thomas’ provide a full range of services for local residents as well as specialist services for patients from further afield. Care takes place in two of London’s best-known teaching hospitals, Guy’s Hospital and St Thomas’ Hospital, where the Evelina London Children’s Hospital is also located. Guy’s and St Thomas are part of King’s Health Partners, one of only five academic health sciences centres in the UK. As such, they are pioneers in health research, and provide high-quality teaching and education.

Today volunteers Chuck, Danielle, Richard, Rowena and Thomas came from a broad range of departments within the hospital to support the 9- and 10-year olds on a challenge that was sure to stretch the budding entrepreneurs’ Working in a Team skills. Let’s find out how they got on.

The Challenge:

Today’s challenge was to Spread the Word about Guy’s and St Thomas’ by creating an exciting new mascot with an important message.

Throughout the day, students carried out lots of research, showcasing their excellent Listening Carefully skills. Not only did they grill their volunteers with questions about their jobs and the skills they were using the most, but all teams were also eager to take the adults’ advice on board in order to succeed on their challenge.
The John Perryn teams then went on a tour of the hospital, including a very special floor where 11 million items of surgical equipment get sterilised every year!

Back in the room with fabulous views from the 29th floor, it was time to get Problem Solving to research all the facts they could about different health departments, before Using Imagination to create their very own mascots to convey a message from their research.
Later in the day, the students took on the roles of news anchors and top journalists, Sharing Ideas on how to keep a healthy heart or how to beat cancer! Their knowledge and understanding of the ideas – including technical medical terms – was very clear as teams put forward their news broadcasts with confidence, professionalism and humour! The panel of judges were spoilt for choice when it came to finding areas to praise.

What they said:

  • “This is our fifth year doing EE so I saw some of these children when they were in Year 1 and you can really see the difference and the progress they’ve made over the years.” – Teacher
  • “You could really tell the difference in participation and energy between the start of the day and the end.” – Volunteer
  • “The day flowed really well and it was well pitched for them.” – Volunteer
  • “It’s perfect how you organise the day: all the preparation and loads of enthusiasm and support from EE the team – it makes the day much smoother. Great organisation, you guys are amazing!” – Volunteer
  • “I’m having so much fun, I don’t want to leave this place!” – Student
  • “Today we worked really well as a team so we could get more done in a short amount of time!” – Student
  • “I’ll go home and tell my family how important it is to be healthy.” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
