The School: Friern Barnet

Now in their 6th year of working with Enabling Enterprise, Friern Barnet School are passionate about developing their students’ enterprise skills and giving young learners across different year groups the opportunities to put these into practice through real-life experiences. Previously, Year 9 students demonstrated their Aiming High and Presenting skills during their ‘Day in Politics’ Challenge, whilst this year’s Year 8 students had the chance to put their Being Creative and Working in a Team skills to the tests as they created a ‘Business in a Day’.

Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 7 to put their Enterprise Skills to practice in an exciting workplace as they entered the world of management consultancy!

The Business: Oliver Wyman

Oliver Wyman is an international management consultancy company, helping businesses to solve their biggest challenges. Most recently, this has included the re-branding of Starbucks and McDonald’s. With offices in over 20 countries, Oliver Wyman employs a total of over 3,000 professionals worldwide, ensuring a truly global approach.

The teams today were joined by Jessica, Priya, Lucy, Faye and Anthony from within the Oliver Wyman team, representing different areas of the business, such as Consultancy and Human Resources, who were able to support the teams as skills experts as well as providing invaluable experience of the working environment and an employee’s needs.

The Challenge: Marketing Moguls

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Enterprise Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the premises, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of consultancy, as well as offering a valuable insight into a workplace and the different working environments. The students were also able to carry out their own market research of the office furniture in place and run the rule over each chair’s comfort, appearance, practicality and design!

Students took on the role of a consultancy team, working on behalf of their client, ChairCo, a struggling chair design and production company in need of their expertise. Having undertaken their crucial market research whilst on the tour and quizzing the volunteers further, teams were Being Creative to design ideas for a brand new chair to present to ChairCo. It was really important that students were Presenting their ideas clearly and effectively to each other so that they could come up with the most creative and innovative design, and using their Problem-Solving skills to respond to employees’ needs. Next up, teams decided on the most effective advertising strategy to promote their new product.

The day culminated in teams setting out why they were such creative consultants and how their company could address ChairCo’s difficulties. They ended by pitching their design and marketing ideas to a panel of judges in the hope that they could persuade them that ChairCo’s future would be a bright one!

What they said:

  • “We are the best consultancy firm because we listen to our clients and then work together to solve their problems with creative ideas and new thinking. – Student, Friern Barnet
  • “This is such a fantastic opportunity for these students to see the world of work and gain exposure to new careers” – Teacher, Friern Barnet
  • “There are so many good, creative ideas coming from each team. They are very innovative with the features they have designed and how they have chosen to advertise the product shows an understanding of their market.” – Volunteer, Oliver Wyman
  • “I didn’t know much about consultancy before today. I think it’s something I’d like to do because you use problem-solving skills but you also get to be creative, to meet lots of people and maybe even travel the world! – Student, Friern Barnet

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
