The School:

Ambler Primary School are in their 2nd year working with Enabling Enterprise. Back in school, students have been busy developing their Enterprise Skills by solving the case of the Sugar Snatcher in their recent ‘Crime Scene‘ Challenge Day. Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 5 to put their Sharing Ideas and Problem Solving skills to the test with the support from professional business volunteers.

The Business:

Metaswitch is a UK-based company that designs, develops, manufactures, and markets telecommunications hardware and software, solving complex communication issues for large organisations.

The Challenge: Tech-Xperts

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Enterprise Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the premises, which allowed the teams to see some of the different jobs available in the world of technology.
Taking on the role of Technology Companies, teams were challenged to apply their Problem Solving skills to design a new app that employees at Metaswitch could use to improve their communication. Alongside choosing a catchy name for their new app, teams thought about the different functions the app would have and how each of these might help solve a communication problem. Teams worked together to make key design decisions including the app’s icon and how it would look in screen.

The day culminated with the Technology Companies Sharing Ideas about their app and how they had developed their Problem Solving in front of the room, whilst the judges watched their presentations.

What they said:

  • “They needed to work in a team to problem solve and had a real life situation outside of the classroom” – Teacher
  • “I think some groups have really come a long way and I’m always impressed with the ideas they come up with and how they develop them” – Volunteer
  • “I was nervous to present at first but the excitement of it all helped me feel more confident” – Student
  • “The skill we used the best in our team was probably staying positive because when every team was ahead of us our team stayed positive and tried our best” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
