The School:

From the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham, Five Elms Primary School is in their third year of working with Enabling Enterprise. Back in school, students have been busy developing their Enterprise Skills by successfully completing projects in their lesson time, but also taking on several Challenge Days as a whole school. For example, they created their very own greetings card companies, but they also designed a wide range of hybrid transport prototypes fit for future generations to use. Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for a lucky few students from Year 6 to stretch all eight of their essential enterprise skills outside the classroom and put their Staying Positive and Problem Solving skills to the test in the world of work, with the support from professional business volunteers.

The Business:

UBS is a global bank, providing services in over 50 countries. Specialising in Wealth Management and Global Asset Management they provide services for high net worth individuals, private, corporate, and institutional clients all over the world. Worldwide, UBS employs over 60,000 people who speak more than 130 languages and are citizens of 135 countries. Today from their prestigious offices in London, volunteers Becky, Martin, Ray and Tom were on hand to support the budding entrepreneurs on a really stretching financial challenge.

The Challenge: Lend-a-Hand

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Enterprise Skills required to do their jobs. Students were particularly quizzical about UBS and the world of finance at large. Students made sure they got the best top tips from our UBS adults as they grilled the volunteers with an imaginative set of professional questions.
Taking on the role of Financial Advisors, student were given the task of advising a client to make sensible financial decisions for a range of different life events. In their teams they had to put their Problem Solving skills to the test to work out the pros and cons of different suggestions. Taking the priorities and needs of the client on board, teams then worked together to suggest the best possible course of action for their client. The teams’ Staying Positive skills were put to the test when they realised that decisions they had made earlier on were having an impact on the advice they were giving their client later in the task.
The day culminated in teams holding a budgeting meeting with the client to share their top tips and financial advice. Volunteers watched the meeting and used their expertise to judge which team had come up with the most convincing financial advice and used their enterprise skills to the highest standard.
