The School:

Located in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, Five Elms Primary is in their third year of working with Enabling Enterprise. Previously, students have been busy developing their Enterprise Skills by successfully completing Challenge Days where they launched their very own greetings card companies, but also by visiting employers across London as part of their enterprising business trips. Today’s challenge was a fantastic opportunity for students from Early Years to Year 6 to put their Enterprise Skills to the test in a very creative challenge.

The Challenge: Future Transport

Over the course of the day, students were Working in a Team to research, design, build and test a new form of transport for the future. They were set the challenge from Ronnie the Robot who had travelled back in time to explain what the world would be like many years in the future. Whilst Early Years were developing their sense of directions and stretching their creativity on a range of hybrid vehicles, teams throughout the school applied their Problem Solving and Staying Positive skills through a series of challenges designed to put their skills to the test. At the end of the day, students tested each other’s designs and practised their presenting by Sharing Ideas in front of the class.

What they said:

  • “Today I have not had a single issue in this class. Bearing in mind they are all at very different academic levels, there are also some who are hearing-impaired, some with special educational needs (…) but they have all been engaged. They’ve been all working beautifully together! If it was me, I’d be doing one of those [Challenge Days] a week – because it’s enabling them to all participate.” – Teacher
  • “I’d rather teach like this than the way we teach every day.” – Teacher
  • “We’ve all been working together and we don’t give up even when it’s difficult. We’ve all really been staying positive. And if someone is feeling down, you can tell them to just try their best.” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great Challenge Day!
