The School: Langtree

Langtree School, based in the village of Woodcote on the Berkshire/Oxfordshire border, is in its first year of working with Enabling Enterprise. Alongside students’ academic achievements, Langtree offers a rich, diverse offer of extracurricular activities, such as today’s Creativity Day which provides opportunities for creative approaches to learning in the ‘outside classroom’.

Today’s challenge was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 9 to put their Enterprise Skills – in particular Being Creative, Working in a Team and Presenting – to the test as they looked to build a business in just one day!

The Challenge: Business in a Day

Students were excited to hone their enterprise skills throughout the day by competing in teams to set up a merchandise company. The groups needed to demonstrate that they were Aiming High and Working in a Team as they identified their own skills, strengths and interests to allocate roles and set themselves targets for the day. Using their Imagination, students quickly formed their own company and designed a new range of merchandise and souvenirs to sell at chosen events to their target markets.

Being Creative was paramount as students designed a logo and slogan for their companies and then designed and created prototypes for their products. Teams then used their Problem Solving skills to devise business plans and calculate their final profits. Finally their Presenting skills were put to good use by marketing their merchandise through targeted promotion, which included TV adverts, billboard posters and social media campaigns such as celebrity-endorsed tweets!

The challenge culminated with teams Presenting their new companies’ ideas and showcasing their creativity in a bid to secure investment.

What they said:

  • “It’s been great to see their imagination really come to the fore. They’ve learnt a lot about what it means to work in a team and have been able to think about their own strengths as well as others’ strengths.” – Teacher
  • “Today has helped me to think about my skills and what I’m good at. I’d have never thought of myself doing these jobs and taking on these roles but now I feel confident that I can.” – Student
  • “This is such an important exercise for kids at this age; before they know it, they’ll need to demonstrate these qualities in interviews and today has been a great platform for developing these skills.” – Teacher
  • “We make stationery for Langtree, but one day we’ll be in every school. Oak trees start from acorns and our company starts with your school.” – Students’ Business Pitch

Thanks to everyone for such a great Challenge Day!
