The School:

St Mary Magdalene in Peckham is in their third year working with Enabling Enterprise. Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 3, 4 and 5 to put their Listening Carefully, Sharing Ideas and Problem Solving skills to the test with the support from professional business volunteers, before they will use them back in school in Lesson Time Projects later this year.

The Business:

White Stuff is a British fashion and lifestyle brand that sells women’s and men’s clothing, accessories and gifts in over 100 shops in the United Kingdom. It also has shops in Germany and Denmark and customers can shop via mail-order catalogues and through its website.

The Challenge: Superior Services

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Enterprise Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the amazing offices, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of retail and get lots of inspiration to inform their ideas later in the day.
Taking on the role of Customer Service Assistants, students were challenged to apply their Problem Solving skills to ensure customer experiences were positive and customer satisfaction remained high by Listening Carefully. Students were then tasked with using their research to create a stunning new shop front for a new White Stuff store, that promoted the brand and attracted new customers. Ideas included welcome signs in different languages, free giveaways and a yeti in beachwear!

The day culminated in student Customer Service Teams presenting their work to a panel of judges, including a special guest judge from the visual merchandising team, putting their Sharing Ideas skills to use in demonstrating their understanding of customer service and how to attract customers.

What they said:

  • “It is such a different environment, what a brilliant thing to be able to bring them to see” – Teacher
  • “I was really so impressed with the progress they made over the day, and how their ideas so closely reflected White Stuff’s values and look.” – Volunteer
  • “They have dogs and shop windows and sweets in their office! I want to come and work here!” – Student
  • “I liked having to use my imagination which was easier because I had my team to help me and I had listened really well during the tour.” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
