The School: Tarvin Primary School

Year 6 from Tarvin Primary School were excited to make the short journey from school to Chester Business Park to visit Bank of America Merrill Lynch. It was a first opportunity for the whole class to spend the day focusing on their Enterprise skills and have the unique opportunity to work with volunteers in the real world of work.

The Business: Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Chester

Bank of America Merrill Lynch is one of the world’s largest financial institutions, serving individual consumers, small- and medium sized businesses and large corporations with a full range of banking, investing, asset management and other financial and risk management products and services.

The Challenge: Lend-a-Hand

Today was all about Working in a Team, Problem Solving and Staying Positive as they learnt about lifestyles, budgeting and how to advise people about being sensible with their money. The day started with a fast-paced edition of higher and lower where the students tested their knowledge of the cost of popular luxury items such as TV and mobile phone packages. They soon moved on to a lifestyle quiz, could they stay in budget and still have the lifestyle they wanted? Aiming High was then the name of the game as they broke down a family budget and advised them on how to make the most of their money. Finally, they were ready and willing to get Sharing Ideas and Using Imagination to become a financial institution who were feeding back to Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

The Results:

The last part of the day was the opportunity to show they were Listening Carefully as each team came up to the front to present back on what they had done. It was great to see how the Leading and supportive skills of the pupils came to the fore to ensure that everyone felt comfortable presenting and that their points were in a logical and clear order. It was a tough choice for the judges when it came to picking a winner!

What they said:

  • “I’ve been so impressed with the pupils Team work today, this is something they often find difficult but today they were fantastic.” – Teacher, Tarvin Primary School
  • “You really saw them develop as the day went on and come out of the themselves. It was great to see their personalities emerge.” – Volunteer, Bank of America Merrill Lynch
  • “We found it hardest to make decisions because one of us kept missing out and didn’t get their idea chosen so to keep them positive we chose their idea in the next round.” – Student, Tarvin Primary School
  • “It was great to see some quiet people in the class do their presentations even though they were nervous.” – Student, Tarvin Primary School

Thanks to Bank of America Merrill Lynch for such a great trip day, and to Year 6 from Tarvin for coming along.
