The Schools:

Gilbertstone Primary School in South Yardley and Our Lady’s Catholic Primary School in Tile Cross, Birmingham, are both into their fourth year of working with Enabling Enterprise. Students in both schools from EYFS to Year 6, have been busy developing their Enterprise Skills in Lesson-Time Projects and Challenge Days over the last twelve months. Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 6 to put their Sharing Ideas and Problem Solving skills to the test with the support from professional business volunteers.

The Business:

Gowling WLG is a Global 100 legal practice, with over 1,400 legal professionals and a range of dedicated business support teams across 19 cities in the UK, Canada, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

The Challenge: Tour the Law

A warm welcome from Gowling WLG and introductions to teams started the day off positively with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Enterprise Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the premises, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of Law.
Taking on the role of Lawyers, students explored two different areas of law, Criminal and Business Law through separate cases designed to put their Problem Solving skills to the test. The first case saw them review police evidence and then play the part of a defence lawyer to build a case for their client. In the second task, the teams of students act as mediators in a business merger, finding different possible solutions and considering the pros and cons of each.
Sharing Ideas skills were put to the test as new challenges arose, and also at the end of the day when each team presented their findings to a panel of professional judges.

What they said:

  • “This has been an amazing experience for our children. They have really done themselves proud and it’s been wonderful to see them work with the Gowling volunteers and Gilbertstone Primary School. They have grown in confidence.” – Teacher, Our Lady’s Catholic Primary
  • ” What a super group of children. I am so impressed with the questions they asked, the way they worked in their new teams and how they used their skills so well to complete their tasks- just as we have to here at work. I’ve really enjoyed the day and would definitely volunteer again. ” – Volunteer, Gowling WLG
  • ” I’m having a great day and I’ve liked meeting new people and sharing ideas with them.” – Student, Gilbertstone
  • ” I quite fancy being a Lawyer when I grow up – especially if I could work for Gowling WLG! – ” – Student, Our Lady’s Catholic Primary

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
