The School: Sythwood Primary School

Sythwood Primary School, based in Woking, have had their first taster experience working with Enabling Enterprise. The school aims for each child to achieve more than they ever thought was possible, and believe that every child will leave Sythwood with more choices available to them than when they started.

Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Years 5 & 6 to put their Staying Positive and Problem Solving skills to the test on a series of financial challenges, with the support of professional business volunteers.

The Business: Metro Bank

Metro Bank is Britain’s first new high-street bank in over 100 years. Metro Bank offer a unique, customer-focused retail banking service. As a business, they make every effort to offer simpler and more convenient banking to their customers. Metro Bank aims to have 150 stores across the UK by 2020.

Today, the students were very lucky to be joined by two volunteers from the Metro Bank team, Manager Kate and Customer Services Operative Natasha, who brought a wealth of financial expertise and insight to help the teams with their tasks!

The Challenge: Lend-a-Hand

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Enterprise Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the bank, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of finance as well as some of the unique services Metro Bank offers its customers. The teams were amazed to see the high-security vaults, Magic Money machine, instant bank card printing machine and even complimentary dog biscuits!
Taking on the role of Financial Advisors, students were introduced to the concept of budgeting and managing income and expenditure effectively to avoid going into debt. They were then given the task of advising a client to make sensible financial decisions for a range of different life events. Teams had to put their Problem Solving skills in action to work out the pros and cons of different suggestions and, taking the priorities and needs of the client on board, then worked together to suggest the best possible course of action for their client.

The teams’ Staying Positive skills were tested when they realised that decisions they had made earlier on were having an impact on the advice they were giving their client later in the day!

The day culminated in teams holding a budgeting meeting with the client to share their top tips and financial advice. Volunteers watched the meeting and used their expertise to judge which team had used their Problem Solving and Staying Positive skills to make the most sensible decisions along the way.

  • “We’ve learnt that it’s important to not always just spend the money you have. Sometimes it’s better to keep the money in your bank to save up for holidays, cars, TVs and phones. You might also have a surprise that needs paying for!” – Student, Sythwood Primary

  • “It was important for the students to concentrate on the skills they were using in what they were doing and this was constantly reinforced throughout the day.
