The School: Gallions Mount Primary

Gallions Mount, based in Greenwich, are in their first year of working with Enabling Enterprise. Today’s Challenge Day was part of the school’s ‘Futures Week’, where students explore opportunities for their future and build aspirations for their future decisions and choices. Today’s challenge was a fantastic opportunity for all students from Reception all the way through to Year 6 to put their Enterprise Skills to the test in a challenge that was truly out of this world!

The Challenge: Operation Moonbase

Students were introduced to their task – establishing a new society on a distant moon called Utopia – and it was immediately apparent that each student would need to be using their Working in a Team and Problem Solving skills in order to be successful.

In Early Years, Gallions Mount’s youngest space explorers were busy packing their imaginary suitcases and creating their Space Passports, ready to embark on an intergalactic journey! Using their Imagination, students were then building models of rockets and buildings for the moon, creating space creatures and exploring the textures of space rocks and moon dust!

Across Key Stages 1 and 2, a series of challenges required teams to use their Enterprise Skills, particularly practising Problem Solving, Using Imagination and Listening Carefully. Teams needed to select a crew to support them on their mission, then design a new species of animal to benefit society before finally creating a model of their own dream city. The day culminated in a series of persuasive pitches at the Intergalactic Trade Fair which gave each team the opportunity to show off their fantastic ideas.

What they said:

  • “The students are loving it! I’m loving it! I wish we could do this every day!” – Teacher, Year 6
  • “I asked my friend if she wanted to make a rocket and she said ‘yes’ so we helped each other. That made me happy.” – Student, Reception
  • “I love how creative it is!” – Student, Year 5
  • “Some of them have really surprised me today, especially those who are sometimes quite shy. I wish we could do something like this more often.” – Teacher, Year 4

Thanks to everyone for such a great Challenge Day!
