The Schools:

Davies Lane Primary and Selwyn Primary are both from the London Borough of Waltham Forest and are both in their third year of working with Enabling Enterprise. Back in school, students have been busy developing their Enterprise Skills by investigating a mysterious Crime Scene. Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for Davies Lane’s Year 6 and Selwyn’s Year 5 students to buddy up and put their Listening Carefully, Sharing Ideas and Problem Solving skills to the test outside the classroom with the support from professional business volunteers.

The Business:

Westfield Corporation is one of the world’s leading shopping centre companies with iconic retail destinations in London, New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles among its portfolio of 40 centres. Today volunteers Jo, Julie, Simon and Tony from Westfield Stratford City were on hand to help the budding entrepreneurs on a stretching challenge.

The Challenge: Superior Service

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Enterprise Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the premises, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of retail. Students got an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour as they were let into the back of house where they met the Security team and the Canine team, who gave them even more insights as to what goes on at Westfield.
Back in the room, teams took on the role of Customer Service Assistants, where students applied their Problem Solving skills to ensure customer experiences were positive and customer satisfaction remained high by Listening Carefully. Tasked with promoting customer loyalty, teams needed to create a brand-new scheme to attract and retain customers.

The day culminated in student Customer Service Teams presenting their work, putting their Sharing Ideas skills to use in demonstrating their understanding of customer service and customer loyalty incentives.

What they said:

  • “Children were engaged for the whole day. There was a really good tour of the site and they were inspired by a range of careers they may not have considered before.” – Teacher
  • “I loved their enthusiasm and their confidence. Some also used great humour in their presentation!” – Volunteer
  • “I’m really proud of our teamwork today. We worked with a new school who we don’t usually work with, but we collaborated well.” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
