The School:

Ambler Primary is in their second year working with Enabling Enterprise. Back in school, students have been busy developing their Enterprise Skills through a variety of Lesson-Time Projects, trips to businesses across London, and successful Challenge Days including solving the crime of the ‘Sugar Snatcher’. Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 6 to put their Staying Positive and Problem Solving skills to the test with the support of a wide range of volunteers from PIMCO including one of the directors!

The Business:

PIMCO is a global investment management firm with a singular focus on preserving and enhancing investors’ assets.

PIMCO manages investments for institutions, financial advisors and individuals. The institutions we serve include corporations, central banks, universities, endowments and foundations, and public and private pension and retirement plans. We also serve advisors and individuals set on personal financial goals, from preparing for retirement to funding higher education.

The Challenge: Lend-a-Hand

The day started off with the students meeting one of the company directors and hearing all about PIMCO and how they use the eight Enterprise Skills within the business. Then, in smaller groups, the students interviewed the other volunteers to find out about the different roles and responsibilities required to do their jobs. The students’ showed off their Using Imagination skills by coming up with interesting and intelligent questions that certainly made the volunteers really think about their roles!
Students then went on a tour of the premises, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of finance. They were able to explore many different departments, including a visit to the trading floor, as well as the on-site recording studio.
Taking on the role of Financial Advisors, students were given the task of advising a client to make sensible financial decisions for a range of different life events. Teams had to put their Problem Solving skills to the test to work out the pros and cons of different suggestions. Taking the priorities and needs of the client on board, teams then worked together to suggest the best possible course of action for their client. The teams’ Staying Positive skills were put to the test when they realised that decisions they had made earlier on were having an impact on the advice they were giving their client later in the day.
The day culminated in teams holding a budgeting meeting with the client to share their top tips and financial advice. Volunteers watched the meeting and used their expertise to judge which team had used their Problem Solving and Staying Positive skills to make the most sensible decisions along the way.
