The Schools:

Godwin Juniors & Harris Primary took part in this special Enabling Enterprise competition to find out about how essential skills such as Staying Positive and Problem Solving are used in the construction industry. It was a fantastic opportunity for students in Key Stage 2 to put their skills to the test with the support from professional business volunteers and see who would excel in the exciting enterprise challenge.

The Business:

ISG is an international construction services company delivering fit out, construction, engineering services. ISG has over 50 offices across Europe, The Middle East, Asia and South America.

The Challenge: Decisive Developers

The day started off with the students reflecting on the Challenge Skills that would be used throughout the day, such as Working in a Team and Aiming High. there was then the opportunity to interview the volunteers from ISG to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Enterprise Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the premises, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of construction.

Taking on the role of Developers, students were then challenged to apply their Problem Solving skills to establish on which site to choose to build their new tall building. Taking the location and needs of the community on board, teams then worked together to build a tower using limited materials. During the build, the teams’ Staying Positive skills were put to the test as new challenges arose, which put extra pressure on both schools to get the challenge completed on time.
The day culminated in teams pitching their plan for development to the judges, who posed as local and new residents, to see if their building was suitable for construction. Students didn’t walk away empty handed with the Staying Positive and Problem Solving Champions leaving with a certificate, as well as a few goodies from ISG!

What they said:

  • “It’s really lovely because you get to see a totally different side to the children. I can see this having real impact with our students” – Teacher, Harris Primary Academy Philip Lane
