The School: Chingford CE Primary

Chingford CE Primary, based in Waltham Forest, are in their third year of working with Enabling Enterprise. In school, students have been busy developing their Enterprise Skills through Lesson-Time Projects and a Challenge Day earlier this year, where students used their Sharing Ideas and Aiming High skills to become the finest politicians in Waltham Forest!

Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 5 to put their Problem Solving and Staying Positive skills to the test, with support from the professional business volunteers from Societe Generale.

The Business: Societe Generale

Societe Generale is a French multinational banking and financial services company head-quartered in Paris. They are one of the largest European financial services groups. As a universal bank, Societe Generale not only offers Retail Banking in France but also International Banking, Financial Services and Corporate and Investment Banking, worldwide.

Our teams today were very lucky to be joined by Lee, Steve, Marina, Fabrice and Lisa, who brought their expertise from a range of sectors within Societe Generale, including Client Services, Fixed Income Assets, Commodities and Change Management.

The Challenge: Lend-a-Hand

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Enterprise Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the premises, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of finance, as well as learning more about the working environment and the measures in place to ensure employee welfare is a priority. Problem Solving and Sharing Ideas were very much in evidence in all of these roles and the teams were picking up some top tips from the professionals to take back to the boardroom for their tasks.

With the help of their volunteers, students explored budgets and how lifestyle choices can impact on how much money people have available to spend, which influences their decisions. By Staying Positive, teams reflected on their decisions and were learning from their mistakes by revisiting group decisions. Taking on the role of Financial Advisors, students were then given the task of advising a client to make sensible financial decisions for a range of different life events. Teams had to stretch their Problem Solving skills to work out the pros and cons of different solutions. Taking the priorities and needs of the client on board, teams then worked together to suggest the best possible course of action for their client.

What they said:

  • “Everybody we saw working here seemed to be really happy, friendly and relaxed. It was like one big family!” – Student, Chingford CE Primary
  • “The volunteers today were very friendly and enthusiastic and the children really enjoyed the tour of the offices. The challenge gave them a real insight into the need for budgeting and realising that they might also need to re-assess their decisions when problems arise. They understand the need to save money for unforeseen expenses.” – Teacher, Chingford CE Primary
  • “It was great to see them think again about their decisions and, in some cases, make changes when they learned new information. This is definitely something we have to do in our work.” – Volunteer, Societe Generale
  • “Today we learnt that it’s hard to make budgeting decisions but it’s very important as it helps you to make sure you have enough money.” – Student, Chingford CE Primary

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
