The School:

William Tyndale Primary School is a long-standing partner of Enabling Enterprise. Back in school, students have been busy developing their Enterprise Skills by completing their lesson-time projects and Challenge Days such as the recent ‘Crime Scene‘ they successfully investigated. Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 4 to put their Staying Positive and Problem Solving skills to the test with the support from professional business volunteers.

The Business:

M&G is a leading investment house. With over 80 years experience in the UK and overseas, M&G manages assets on behalf of a wide range of investors across UK, Europe, Asia, the Americas and South Africa. They work in offices across Europe and Asia to ensure that their clients make the most of their money.

The Challenge: Lend-a-Hand

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Enterprise Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the premises, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of finance.
Taking on the role of Financial Advisors, students were given the task of advising a client to make sensible financial decisions for a range of different life events. Teams had to put their Problem Solving skills to the test to work out the pros and cons of different suggestions. Taking the priorities and needs of the client on board, teams then worked together to suggest the best possible course of action for their client. The teams’ Staying Positive skills were put to the test when they realised that decisions they had made earlier on were having an impact on the advice they were giving their client later in the day.
The day culminated in teams holding a budgeting meeting with the client to share their top tips and financial advice. A brand new judging panel and guest audience watched the meeting in the auditorium and used their expertise to judge which team had used their Problem Solving and Staying Positive skills to make the most sensible decisions along the way.

What they said:

  • “It was an amazing experience for the children to present in such a formal venue and to receive such positive feedback from the professionals.” – Teacher
  • “They impressed me with how deeply they thought about the issues and budgeting. I would have loved this opportunity at their age.” – Volunteer
  • “I really liked getting to go on a tour and see all the different areas – the people look like they are working so hard here all sharing ideas and working out how to solve different problems!” – Student
  • “I was a bit nervous to present with the microphone but then I really liked it.” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
