The School:

Oaklands Primary School, based in the London Borough of Ealing, is in their 5th year of working with Enabling Enterprise. Recently, students have been busy developing their Enterprise Skills on business trips to Higgins Construction, Oliver Wyman and the University of West London. Today’s challenge was a fantastic opportunity for students from Reception to Year 6 to put their Problem Solving, Using Imagination and Working in a Team skills to the test.

The Challenge: Level Up!

All eight of the enterprise skills were required for students to successfully complete the many stages in developing a new platform computer game. Teams in Early Years researched different games and thought about how these were played, before designing their own and choosing the materials to make these with. In KS2, students began the day researching Oaklands’ values and places within the school that would become the setting and theme of their game, whilst teams in KS1 thought about the people who help them around the school and created 8-bit versions of them! Tasked with designing not only the game’s map but also their game’s characters, obstacles and objects, students’ effective Using Imagination skills were vital to each team’s success.

Once their game worlds were complete, the teams were introduced to coding, the logical way computers think and the way humans Solve Problems to communicate with them before precisely engineering how to control their own character. It was then time for the students to become Sales Representatives and show off their ideas in a final presentation to their class at the EE Game Expo!

What they said:

  • “Our game is about our three school values: Pride, respect and a love of learning.” – Student, Year 3
  • “They really enjoyed the freedom to make their own decisions and lead on what they wanted to do.” – Teacher, Reception
  • “I loved this because I have had so many ideas about computer games in my life and now I finally get to do it.” – Student, Year 2
  • “I love how they have worked as a team and stuck to their plans throughout.” – Teacher, Year 3

Thanks to everyone for such a great Challenge Day!
