The School: Wheelers Lane Primary School

Wheelers Lane Primary School in Birmingham are in their fourth year of working with Enabling Enterprise and this year they will be developing key Enterprise Skills in their students through projects such as Big Business Challenge and Active Minds. Last year, they completed their ‘Day in Politics‘ Challenge Day and today Year 6 were keen to show off their Enterprise Skills in a workplace environment!

The Business: Hogarths, Solihull

Hogarths are a group of beautifully restored hotels based in the West Midlands. Set in 30 acres of beautiful countryside, Hogarths Solihull caters for businesses, events and for whole families to relax and spend time together.

The Challenge: Delightful Dos

The teams spent the first part of the challenge conducting some crucial research by interviewing Hogarths staff about their roles, responsibilities and the skills they use in their day-to-day jobs. They then went on an exciting tour of the hotel which sparked their imagination for their project: to plan an engaging event at the hotel, needing to consider a theme, entertainment, food and decoration. This put their Using Imagination and Sharing Ideas skills to the test as teams were challenged to create a new and original event tailored to this luxury setting.

The Results:

Throughout the challenge, students benefited from expert advice from the Hogarths professionals and there was a healthy level of competition between teams, who were all Aiming High. With themes such as Tropical Islands, Halloween, Christmas and New Year, it was clear the enterprising teams had used their listening skills and their research conducted on the tour. The day culminated with the 10 and 11 year olds pitching their event plans to a panel of Hogarths judges who had a very tough job picking a winning team.

What they said:

  • “The children have responded brilliantly to this exciting challenge and have loved working with the employees from Hogarths – all were so welcoming and the children have really enjoyed finding out about how the skills we work on in school are vital in this workplace.” – Teacher, Wheelers Lane Primary School
  • “As a first-time volunteer with Enabling Enterprise this has been a great day. I am amazed to see how the children have grown in confidence and took part in the challenges – so enthusiastic. I wish I’d been able to do something like this when I was their age – it’s so important!” – Volunteer, Hogarths
  • “This was my first Enabling Enterprise trip and I have had such a great time. I’m proud of myself for presenting in front of everyone and aiming high all day. I also loved looking around Hogarths and seeing what happens here!” – Student, Wheelers Lane Primary School

Thanks to Hogarths, Solihull for such a great trip day, and to Year 6 from Wheelers Lane for coming along.
