The School:

Kenmont Primary School is in their fifth year of working with Enabling Enterprise. Back in school, students have been busy developing their Enterprise Skills by successfully completing a range of Lesson-Time Projects but also taking on stretching Challenge Days as a whole school – ‘A Day in Politics’ and ‘Future Transport’ to name just a couple. Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 5 to put their Staying Positive and Problem Solving skills to the test outside the classroom, with the support from professional business volunteers.

The Business:

First State Investments is a global asset management business with experience across a range of asset classes and specialist investment sectors. They manage investments on behalf of institutional investors and pension funds, wholesale distributors and platforms, financial advisers and their clients. They employ teams of investors who are specialists in their respective fields and set their own investment style. They have offices in London, Edinburgh, Paris, Frankfurt, Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, Jakarta, New York, Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland, Beijing and Shenzhen.
Today FSI volunteers Bismah, Claire, Cordelia, Krissy and Anthony were on hand to support the budding entrepreneurs on a finance-related challenge.

The Challenge: Lend-a-Hand

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Enterprise Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the premises, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of finance.
Taking on the role of Financial Advisors, students were given the task of advising a client to make sensible financial decisions for a range of different life events. Teams had to put their Problem Solving skills to the test to work out the pros and cons of different suggestions. Taking the priorities and needs of the client on board, teams then worked together to suggest the best possible course of action for their client. The teams’ Staying Positive skills were put to the test when they realised that decisions they had made earlier on were having an impact on the advice they were giving their client later in the day.
The day culminated in teams holding a budgeting meeting with the client to share their top tips and financial advice. Volunteers watched the meeting and used their expertise to judge which team had maximised their enterprise skills to the highest standard in order to make the most sensible decisions along the way.

What they said:

  • “We’ve been on a few trips with Enabling Enterprise before and I want to say a really big thank you to the volunteers for the time you spent with the children because it is the one thing the children go away with. You were brilliant! Thank you!” – Teacher
  • “There is so much potential in the children with all their characters: I think we underestimate what they can actually do.” – Volunteer
  • “This was one of the best days we’ve done! The breakdown into little tasks was really good. It was amazing to see teams be confident at different things.” – Volunteer
  • “For me, today was about the life skills they’ve been able to develop and it was fantastic to see that over the course of the day. Seeing them at the start compared with the end of the challenge, you see the value of it.” – Volunteer
  • “One of the children asked me: ‘Can we come back tomorrow?’.” – Volunteer
  • “We were staying positive because we were working together as a team and it was OK even if we got it wrong because everyone was happy with the decisions we made.” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
