The School: Hatfeild Primary School

Hatfeild Primary School is in their first year working with Enabling Enterprise. This year, students will develop their Enterprise Skills through a Challenge Day and enterprise projects for every year group. Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 5 to put their Problem Solving and Working in a Team skills to the test with the support from Deena, the volunteer at Thames Water.

The Business: Thames Water

Thames Water is the UK’s largest water and wastewater services company, and supplies 2.6 gigalitres of drinking water per day, and treats 4.4 gigalitres of wastewater per day. Thames Water’s 15 million customers make up 27% of the UK population.

The Water Works Challenge

The day started off with a game to test the students’ Working in a Team skills when they had to build the tallest tower they could out of their… shoes! The Year 5 students then found out all about Thames Water and what they should and should not flush down the toilet! Next, they got the chance to quiz Deena about her job and there was some excellent Problem Solving going on to find out as much interesting information as possible, for example someone asked, “What qualifications do you need to do your job?” After lunch the Hatfeild teams were lucky enough to go on a tour of the whole sewage treatment site before then applying their Problem Solving and Working in a Team skills to the pipe network challenge.

What they said:

  • “We’ve been so impressed with your communication skills as you’ve really listened to each other and even if you didn’t agree you took other people’s ideas on board and took turns to share your ideas. Remember you can do this when you go back to school!” – Teacher
  • “The teams today were great at problem solving and discussing ways of including everyone’s ideas!” – Deena, Volunteer
  • “I’m so proud of what me and my team have done as we worked so well together to make sure all the pipes connected up and even when we had a problem we just talked about it and thought of a way to fix it.” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
