The School:

Oaklands Primary is in their 5th year working with Enabling Enterprise. Back in school, students have been busy developing their Enterprise Skills by visiting top businesses, working in teams on Lesson-Time Projects and engaging in exciting Challenge Days. Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 3 to put their Staying Positive and Problem Solving skills to the test with the support from professional business volunteers.

The Business:

Higgins Group is an award winning, family run construction company with over 50 years experience in major housing developments. Throughout London and South East the company currently has 27 live projects. Today’s challenge was at the St Bernards site and the volunteers from Higgins and Catalyst Housing were able to share their guidance and expertise with the excited young students.

The Challenge: Decisive Developers

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Enterprise Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the premises, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of construction.
Taking on the role of Developers, students were then challenged to apply their Problem Solving skills to establish on which site to choose to build their new tall building. Taking the opportunities and constraints of the locations, teams then worked together to build a tower using limited materials. During the build, the teams’ Staying Positive skills were put to the test as the developers had to work to a very tight deadline!
The day culminated in teams pitching their plan for development to the judges, to see if their building was suitable for construction.

What they said:

  • “It is so important for them to have this experience and to try and get along with each other. We will definitely keep working on it back at school.” – Teacher
  • “I was very impressed with the presentations and how much students had taken on board throughout the day – not only did they show an understanding of key issues in construction but they were also able to articulate how they had used the enterprise skills and why these were important.” – Volunteer
  • “I’m very proud of how we worked as a team today, especially when we each had our jobs for the building.” – Student
  • “I still want to work on Staying Positive as I don’t want to just give up on things.” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
