The School:

Oasis Academy Warndon, based in Worcester were very excited to visit the city centre of Birmingham to take part in the school’s first ever Enabling Enterprise workplace visit.

The Business:

Carillion plc is a British multinational construction services company whose headquarters are in the West Midlands. Working in the UK as well as Canada, the Middle East and the Caribbean, Carillion employs over 40,000 workers.

The Challenge: Decisive Developers

The day began with the Year 5 and 6 students interviewing volunteers from Carillion to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Enterprise Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went to view the current construction site in the heart of Birmingham City Centre to see the exciting new redevelopment project going on and to tour the Carillion offices, visiting different departments and talking to the staff, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of construction.
Taking on the role of Developers, students were then challenged to apply their Problem Solving skills to establish on which site to choose to build their new tall building. Teams worked together to build a tower using limited materials, such as paper, scissors and tape. During the build, the teams’ Staying Positive skills were put to the test as the time was quickly running out.
The day culminated in teams pitching their plan for development to the judges, who posed as local and new residents, to see if their building was suitable for construction.

What they said:

  • “The children have had a fabulous time with Enabling Enterprise at Carillion! They were enthusiastic and engaged for the whole day. It has really opened out children’s eyes and gave them experiences and opportunities that they haven’t had before.” – Teacher
  • “This is one of the best school visits we have ever done here. It was fantastic to see the progress in the children over the whole day, especially those who were quite shy to begin with but gained confidence. They did such great presentations by the end of the day.” – Volunteer
  • “I’m most proud of my presentation. I was really nervous but nobody knew because I’d prepared myself properly beforehand.” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
