The School:

Cranford Primary School is in their fifth year working with Enabling Enterprise. Back in school, students have been busy developing their Enterprise Skills by a mixture of Challenge Days, most recently ‘Future Transport‘ and Lesson-time Projects such as Number Crunching and Active Minds.

Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 5 to put their Using Imagination and Sharing Ideas skills to the test with the support from professional business volunteers.

The Business:

Hounslow Highways is the highways service provider working on behalf of the London Borough of Hounslow. They are responsible for maintaining the roads, pavements and street lighting across the borough, as well as providing a number of other key services including street cleaning, winter maintenance and enforcement.

The Challenge: Marketing Moguls

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Enterprise Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the premises, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of equipment used by Hounslow Highways to maintain the roads as well as the impressive Operations Hub where all the information about roads in the Borough is gathered.
Students took on the role of a marketing team at a new and exciting company that stocks and sells chairs. Teams first undertook crucial market research to find out what features and benefits the employees wanted before Using Imagination to design a brand-new chair. It was really important that students were Sharing Ideas with each other so that they could come up with the most creative and innovative design. Next up, teams decided on the most effective advertising strategy to promote their new product.
The day culminated in teams pitching their design and marketing ideas to a panel of judges in the hope that they could persuade them that their chair was the one to buy.

What they said:

  • “Today was a fun and informative day for our students, full of interactive activities delivered at a good pace and emphasising teamwork. The tour was a special highlight as well.” – Teacher
  • “Having done this before it was great to be back! Today’s challenge was new and I really liked how creative it was. It was also great to hear students asking so many relevant questions on the tour. ” – Volunteer
  • “The thing that I learned today is that whether you win or lose it’s all about sticking to the task, working in a team and aiming high.” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
