The School:

Cofton Primary School are in there first year working with Enabling Enterprise. Back in school, students have been busy developing their Enterprise Skills by taking part in Enterprise Lesson Time Projects and have recently participated in a whole-school Challenge Day where they took on the role of crime scene investigators to help solved the crime of the Sugar Snatcher. Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 6 to put their Sharing Ideas and Problem Solving skills to the test with the support from professional business volunteers.

The Business:

Mills & Reeve LLP is a British law firm headquartered in London. It employs around 900 staff, including over 400 lawyers and 114 partners. As a law firm it embraces forward thinking approaches to service, billing, commercial know-how, innovation, people management and community engagement.

The Challenge: Tour the Law

The day started off with the pupils interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Enterprise Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the offices, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of Law.
Taking on the role of Lawyers, students explored two different areas of law, Criminal and Business Law through separate cases designed to put their Problem Solving skills to the test. The first case saw them review police evidence and then play the part of a defence lawyer to build a case for their client. In the second task, the teams of students act as mediators in a business merger, finding different possible solutions and considering the pros and cons of each.
Sharing Ideas skills were put to the test as new challenges arose, and also at the end of the day when each team presented their findings to a panel of professional judges.

What they said:

  • ” The children were incredible – engaged, inquisitive and able to demonstrate the essential skills required to work in Law” – Volunteer, Mills & Reeve LLP
  • ” Seeing the children grow in confidence has been fantastic. They were engaged, enthused and the challenge was so much fun.” – Volunteer, Mills & Reeve LLP
  • “I feel so good. I did a presentation at a law firm. I surprised myself. I’m so proud. I actually did it – that was the best part of the day!’” – Year 6 pupil, Cofton Primary School
  • “I’m considering becoming a Medical Lawyer now!” – Year 6 pupil, Cofton Primary School
  • ” After today I really think I’d like to be a lawyer – maybe a working in business law. It would be good to help companies merge!’- Year 6 pupil, Cofton Primary School

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
