The School: Hermitage Primary

Based in Tower Hamlets, Hermitage Primary School is in its first year of working with Enabling Enterprise, with some students having previously been on a competition day. The school puts the needs of its students at the heart of everything it does, making learning enjoyable. Later in the year, Years 1-3 will be taking part in an exciting Challenge Day which is sure to test their enterprise skills, while Year 3 students will develop these further through a Lesson-Time Project in class.

Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 6 to put their Sharing Ideas and Problem Solving skills to the test with the support from professional business volunteers.

The Business: Allen & Overy

Allen and Overy are a leading international law firm, founded 87 years ago in 1930, and have been working with clients on complex legal situations ever since. Advanced delivery is how Allen & Overy describes the bold solutions they are developing, together with their clients, to solve their challenges. Not only do they care about the needs of their clients but it’s important they give back to the community as well.

The Challenge: Tour the Law

Our teams were very lucky to be joined by a wide range of volunteers throughout the day, each bringing their own expertise from different areas within the law firm, whether it was lawyers, members of the marketing team, PAs or Trainee Solicitors. The day started off with the students interviewing some of these volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Enterprise Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the premises, which allowed the teams to gain an insight into the working day inside a law firm and the different facilities available to employees, such as the gym, dining areas, meeting spaces and medical services, which ensure they are able to carry out their work effectively and efficiently.

Taking on the role of law firms, students explored two different areas of law: Criminal and Business Law. Through separate cases designed to put their Problem Solving skills to the test, they explored how law professionals Work in a Team to find the most effective solutions for their clients. The first case saw teams review police evidence and then play the part of a defence lawyer to build a case for their client. In the second task, the teams of students acted as mediators in a business merger, finding different possible solutions and considering the pros and cons of each.

Sharing Ideas skills were put to the test as new challenges arose, and also at the end of the day when each team presented their findings to a panel of professional judges.

What they said:

  • “I am proud of how we have worked as a team to solve cases and share our ideas.” – Student, Hermitage Primary
  • “The students have really enjoyed the practical exercises related to real-life situations. By talking to the volunteers and asking questions to adults, they have learnt how to ask relevant questions and listen to answers. There has been lots of good input all round on transferable skills and this insight into the world of work and law has certainly heightened their aspirations.” – Teacher, Hermitage Primary
  • “I was amazed at how quickly they grasped the legal concepts and how clearly they were thinking about these. Their presentations were fantastic, demonstrating real confidence and speaking eloquently on the subject of law. It’s definitely been my favourite part of the day so far!” – Volunteer, Allen & Overy
  • “I have learnt that law is a serious matter and that, if we do not have laws, it would be chaos. Laws are here to make the world a civilised place.” – Student, Hermitage Primary

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
