The School: Becontree Primary School

Becontree Primary School is in their third year working with Enabling Enterprise. Last year, students developed their Enterprise Skills through enterprise projects, business trips and their ‘Future Transport‘ Challenge Day. Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 5 to put their Staying Positive and Problem Solving skills to the test with the support from Costain Skanska volunteers.

The Business: Costain Skanska

Costain Skanska is a joint venture between Costain Group and Skanska AB, two constructions and civil engineering companies working on the Crossrail project. Projects on the build have included: civil engineering, advanced works, ticket hall fit-outs, the constructions of stations; as well as 30 metre deep shafts to house ventilation facilities and emergency exits.

The Challenge: Decisive Developers

The day started off with the students interviewing the Costain Skanska volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Enterprise Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the site, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of construction.
Taking on the role of developers, students were then challenged to apply their Problem Solving skills to establish on which site to choose to build their new tall building. Taking the location and needs of the community on board, teams then worked together to build a tower using limited materials. During the build, the teams’ Staying Positive skills were put to the test as new challenges arose, which put the developers’ budgets under strain.
The day culminated in teams pitching their plan for development to the judges to see if their building was suitable for construction.

What they said:

  • “Throughout the day the pupils were encouraged to take on different roles and were challenged to practise and achieve each of EE’s skills, particularly teamwork.” – Teacher
  • “I think the trip is such a good opportunity for the students to have new experiences and meet new people. I was so impressed with how they interacted with all the new adults, so professionally.” – Volunteer
  • “I learned about how to stay positive particularly when we were running out of time on the build and we had to encourage each other to keep going.” – Year 5 Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
