The School:

Holly Park Primary School is in their 4th year working with Enabling Enterprise. Back in school, students have been busy developing their Enterprise Skills by taking part in the ‘Level Up!’ Challenge Day, which involved teams taking on the roles of designers for a new video game based on their school. Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 6 to put their Sharing Ideas and Problem Solving skills to the test with the support from professional business volunteers.

The Business:

Metaswitch is a UK-based company that designs, develops, manufactures, and markets telecommunications hardware and software, solving complex communication issues for large organisations.

The Challenge: Tech-Xperts

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Enterprise Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the premises, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of technology.
Taking on the role of Technology Companies, teams were challenged to apply their Problem Solving skills to design a new app that employees could use to improve their communication. Alongside choosing a catchy name for their new app, teams thought about the different functions the app would have and how each of these might help solve a communication problem. Teams worked together to make key design decisions including the app’s icon and how it would appear in the app store.

The day culminated with the Technology Companies Sharing Ideas about their app and how they had developed their Problem Solving in front of the room, whilst the judges watched their presentations.

What they said:

  • “This is how I want my classroom to be. The skills you’ve used today will continue back in school.” – Teacher
  • “I think they have gained some knowledge about the different jobs available within tech and it’s definitely sparked some of them to think that they might want to work in a place like this when they grow up” – Volunteer
  • “I’m proud mainly not for me but for my team because we weren’t really friends before today but we have worked together and overcome that” – Student
  • “My team wasn’t really listening to each other at the beginning but we got better and we’ve ended up with something pretty decent” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
