The School: Colegrave Primary

Colegrave Primary School, based in Stratford, are in their second year of working with Enabling Enterprise. Teachers at Colegrave work hard to develop their students’ enterprise skills such as Sharing Ideas, Staying Positive and Working in a Team. Last year, a group of students from Year 3 and 4 were lucky enough to take part in the ‘Future Transport‘ Challenge Day which saw them work in mixed year-group teams and put their enterprise skills to the test!

The Business: UBS

UBS is a global bank, providing services in over 50 countries. Specialising in Wealth Management and Global Asset Management they provide services for high net worth individuals, private, corporate, and institutional clients all over the world. Worldwide, UBS employs 60,099 people who speak more than 130 languages and are citizens of 135 countries.

Today, the students were joined by Sarah, Chris, Neil, Gilbert, Roger, Vanessa and Sharon, who work in a variety of roles at UBS, including Project Manager, Commodities Trading Associate, Executive Assistant and Business Architect. Each brought their knowledge and expertise to support Colegrave’s newest financial advisers.

The Challenge: Lend-a-Hand

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Enterprise Skills required to do their jobs. Taking on the role of Financial Advisors, students were introduced to the concept of budgeting and managing income and expenditure effectively to avoid going into debt. They were then given the task of advising a client to make sensible financial decisions for a range of different life events.

Teams had to put their Problem Solving skills to the test to work out the pros and cons of different potential solutions. Taking the priorities and needs of the client on board, teams then worked together to suggest the best possible course of action for their client. The teams’ Staying Positive skills were put to the test when they realised that decisions they had made earlier on were having an impact on the advice they were giving their client later in the day.

The day culminated in teams holding a budgeting meeting with the client to share their top tips and financial advice. Volunteers watched the meeting and used their expertise to judge which team had used their Problem Solving and Staying Positive skills to make the most sensible decisions along the way. Every student stood up and presented with great confidence and authority, clearly setting out their financial advice and the stages of their decision-making processes.

What they said:

  • “I’ve really enjoyed my day and will definitely be learning some lessons from today. I’d recommend volunteering for a trip to anybody.” – Volunteer, UBS
  • “I’ve learnt today that money doesn’t just grow on trees!” – Student, Colegrave Primary
  • “This trip has inspired and motivated our children; they’ve tackled ‘real life’ problems alongside professionals from UBS who shared their knowledge and expertise. They were enthralled in the project and challenged by contextualised problems.” – Teacher, Colegrave Primary
  • “I can’t believe these children are so young! They have taken so much on board and have shown unbelievable problem-solving skills and come up with imaginative solutions. They’ve learnt some important life lessons today.” – Volunteer, UBS
  • “We’ve learnt so many important lessons about life today. I now know that I can’t just ask my parents for a new toy or for them to spend money on anything; They have a budget and I understand that now.” – Student, Colegrave Primary

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
