The School:

Audley Primary School is in their 6th year of working with Enabling Enterprise. In school, students have been busy developing their Enterprise Skills on their ‘Crime Scene Investigation‘ Challenge Day and their Lesson Time Projects. Today’s workplace visit was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 4 to put their Staying Positive and Problem Solving skills to the test with the support from professional business volunteers.

The Business:

Two of Europe’s most prominent and innovative engineering and construction companies – Laing O’Rourke and Murphy – have come together to form LM, a powerful joint venture, working to deliver the northern section of HS2’s phase one enabling works.

Both companies are leaders in rail infrastructure delivery, tunnelling, bridge construction, civil engineering, offsite manufacturing and digital engineering. The combination of skills and strengths means that LM can offer a fully rounded service that builds on the best of each organisation and complements the diverse requirements of 21st century major project delivery.

The Challenge: Decisive Developers

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Enterprise Skills required to do their jobs. Students then went on a tour of the premises, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of construction.
Taking on the role of Developers, students were then challenged to apply their Problem Solving skills to establish on which site to choose to build their new tall, residential building. Taking the location on board, teams then worked together to build a tower using limited materials. During the build, the teams’ Staying Positive skills were put to the test as challenges arose, and groups had to focus on their Working in a Team skills to complete the challenge on time.
The day culminated in teams pitching their plan for development to the judges to see if their building was suitable for construction.

What they said:

  • “Today has given students experience of the world of work and allowed them to be inspired and perhaps consider a career in construction and engineering. ” – Teacher
  • “Everyone in the office has been very impressed with the children and how sensible and polite they have been. Today has been a great opportunity for them; something I certainly didn’t have at school.” – Volunteer
  • “I am proud of my team because everyone participated in every activity” – Student
  • “I really enjoyed the challenge! My team never gave up and kept going when it got difficult.” – Student

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
