The School: Chingford CE Primary

Based in Waltham Forest, Chingford CE Primary is in their third year of working with Enabling Enterprise. In school, students have been busy developing their Enterprise Skills through Lesson-Time Projects and a Challenge Day earlier this year, where students used their Problem Solving and Aiming High skills to become the finest politicians in Waltham Forest!

Today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 4 to put their Using Imagination and Sharing Ideas skills to the test, with the support from professional business volunteers from Forward3D.

The Business: Forward3d

Forward3D helps top brands stay visible online. For example, Forward3D helps British Airways, Gucci and John Lewis advertise and reach customers over the internet. This may be through adverts before a YouTube video starts, or by making sure certain brands come up when you do a Google search. The company employs over 300 people across offices in London, New York, Shanghai, Soul and Tokyo.

Forward3d place extensive focus on the development of their staff, drawing on the business’s three values: Always Learning and Teaching, Use Technology to Innovate and Take the Initiative. Today, our teams were joined by Pooja and Lara, who brought their knowledge of digital marketing and client services, as well experiences of communicating with clients and colleagues from the London office and around the world.

The Challenge: Tech-xperts

The day started off with the students interviewing the volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Enterprise Skills required to do their jobs. The teams then went on a tour of the offices, led by Bobbi, which allowed them to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of digital marketing, as well as giving an insight into how Forward3D employees communicate using various technology.

With the goal of solving a communication-related problem with a new app, the teams were looking out for ways in which Forward3D employees could communicate and stay in contact easily through the introduction of technology.
With a good understanding of what a Forward3D employee’s working day might look like and the challenges they face, students took on the role of app developers. Once they had decided on a solution, the teams began their paper prototyping, drawing out logos and developing ideas for special functions, too.

The Results

Creating apps with functions ranging from time zone detection and automatic scheduling of message delivery to translating languages into emojis to make them accessible globally, the two teams were Problem Solving and Working in a Team so effectively that the scoreboard filled up rapidly with points for the enterprise skills on show! They ensured their ideas included suggestions from everybody in their team, preparing not only their informative screenshot sketches of what their app would look like in action, but also putting together some professional presentations to show off their project. Judges Lara and Pooja were suitably impressed with the creativity of each team and had nothing but praise for the aspiring developers.

What they said:

  • “I would love to work here one day. It’s amazing and the way it’s all set out makes you feel really creative.” – Student, Chingford CE Primary
  • “This is a very welcoming company and the children have easily been able to engage with adults in a work environment. They have learnt so much today about teamwork and have shown great confidence to speak aloud to a group.” – Teacher, Chingford CE Primary
  • “It was so much fun! I loved interacting with the students and talking to them about what I do so that they understand a little more about our roles. They had great curiosity: this is such a new industry but they already know so much about it, which is so important for their futures.” – Volunteer, Forward3D
  • “I have learnt today that working well in a team makes everything easier!” – Student, Chingford CE Primary

Thanks to everyone for such a great trip day!
