The School: William Tyndale Primary School

Based in Islington, William Tyndale Primary School have been working in partnership with Enabling Enterprise for many years. Alongside developing core enterprise skills through Lesson-Time Projects, students also demonstrated fantastic Using Imagination, Working in a Team and Problem-Solving skills on their ‘Future Transport’ Challenge Day last year. As an enterprising school, William Tyndale also have a Skill of the Month where the whole school hones in on one of the eight enterprise skills and demonstrates this in their everyday activities.

Today, it was the turn of Year 6 students to take on the role of property developers as they took their Working in a Team skills to the next level!

The Business: Savills, London

Savills plc is a global real estate services provider listed on the London Stock Exchange. They have an international network of more than 700 offices and associates throughout the Americas, the UK, continental Europe, Asia Pacific, Africa and the Middle East, offering a broad range of specialist advisory, management and transactional services to clients all over the world. Savills people combine entrepreneurial spirit and a deep understanding of specialist property sectors with the highest standards of client care.

William Tyndale’s newest property developers were today joined by 12 Savills volunteers who were taking part in leadership training around motivation, which they put straight into practice by being brilliantly enthusiastic and positive with the Year 6 students!

The Challenge: Decisive Developers

After finding out more about Savills and the volunteers’ roles, responsibilities and the enterprise skills required, a tour of the premises by Savills employees Jamie and Ally allowed teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the world of property and real estate, and how Savills employees were putting their skills into action, particularly those of Working in a Team and Listening.

Taking on the role of developers, students were then challenged to apply their Problem-Solving skills to establish which site they would choose for their new tall building. Taking the location and needs of the community on board, teams worked together to build a tower that satisfied the build criteria. During the build, teams’ Staying Positive skills were put to the test as new challenges arose, each putting the developers’ decision-making (and budgets) under strain!

The Results:

The day culminated in teams pitching their plans for redevelopment to the Savills judges. The Savills volunteers were blown away by the confidence of the teams as every single student stood up and presented clearly and in a really engaging manner with lots of the Year 6 students including humour and hand gestures in their presentations!

What they said:

  • “The volunteers from Savills were really engaged and supportive of the students throughout the day and the children got an excellent insight into the property industry. The challenge really helped them to develop the 2 key skills of problem solving and staying positive.” – Teacher, William Tyndale
  • “I’ve really enjoyed meeting all the new adults today and working with them in a team and the tour was amazing, I would love to work here one day!” – Student, William Tyndale
  • “One of the great things I got out of today was by explaining what I enjoy about my job to the children; I was reminded why I love doing what I do!” – Volunteer, Savills
  • “Today the children had to understand the task in hand, listen to the clients’ needs and deliver a project that met them. This is exactly what we have to do in our jobs and it’s brilliant that they can already do this!” – Volunteer, Savills

Thanks to Savills for such a great trip day, and to Year 6 students from William Tyndale Primary for coming along and making it so memorable!
