The School: Clifton Primary

This is Clifton Primary’s first year working with Enabling Enterprise to develop skills across the school. Earlier in the year, Year 4 and Year 5 took part in a Challenge Day back in school where they became the creators of a new range of greetings cards. Today was a chance for 15 Year 6 students to put their Enterprise Skills to the test in the world of work. Let’s find out how they got on.

The Business: BBC Worldwide, London

BBC Worldwide Limited is the main commercial arm and a wholly owned subsidiary of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).They are responsible for making a wide range of British programming available across the globe, both through direct sales and licencing agreements. They have offices globally as well as a central base in London.

The Challenge: Recruitment Race

The students were set the task of recruiting new staff members to join several departments within the BBC. In teams, they explored the world of recruitment through interviewing staff and a tour of Television Centre to learn more about BBC Worldwide. With a focus on Problem Solving and Leading skills, students competed in exciting, fast-paced activities that mimic the processes of recruitment, persuasive pitching and events-planning within a large organisation.

The Results:

After studying the roles they would be recruiting for, teams identified key competencies and skill sets. Finally, they watched interviews with potential candidates and decided who would best suit each of the roles they had available. Teachers, volunteers and students recognised each other’s fantastic efforts, and in particular how well they worked together to hire the right people for the jobs! The day culminated in some excellent presentations where judges from BBC Worldwide had to decide the ultimate winning team of the day.

What they said:

  • “The students have gained an understanding of how a business can branch out from a brand – I wish all my students could get this experience!” – Teacher, Clifton Primary
  • “It’s really important for us to get to share what we do with these young people – the way they have worked together today on a real world problem has been inspiring.” – Volunteer, BBC Worldwide
  • “BBC is great! Today has been so much fun!” – Student, Clifton Primary

Thanks to BBC Worldwide for such a great trip day, and to Year 6 from Clifton Primary School for coming along.
