The School: Southgate Primary School

Southgate Primary School, located in Crawley, is an Enabling Enterprise partner school who have completely embraced incorporating primary enterprise skills development into their curriculum. Over the past few years, students from Southgate Primary have been taking part in Lesson-Time Projects, Challenge Days and trips to top businesses such as law firm Gowling WLG. Today students from across the whole school would be taking their enterprise skills to the next level by taking on a challenge fit for champions!

The Challenge: Game On!

On today’s challenge Southgate students were Working in a Team to design a brand new type of team sport to play. Throughout the day teams had to think about how every little component of their sport would operate – considering how many players would be required, what rules would be followed, what specialist equipment would be needed and what features the playing surface would have. Strong Using Imagination skills would be required to push boundaries and come up with something radically different from all the existing sports, ensuring it would be a huge success with children and adults alike.

The Results:

Teams got off to a cracking start on the day as they were Aiming High by tweaking the different components of current sports and how some parts could be combined with others to create an innovative sport discipline. With kits, playbooks and rules to decide on within a tight amount of time, students had to excel at Working in a Team to come to decisions everybody was happy with. When disagreements did arise, the students showed off their fantastic resilience by Staying Positive and Listening Carefully to teammates’ opinions to help resolve the situation. The day culminated with a series of expert presentations where the creative teams explained all about their new sport, rules, equipment and special features. Would the new discipline make it to the Olympics?

What they said:

  • “The class usually struggles with teamwork, but not today: they really are doing brilliantly at Working in a Team which surprised me.” – Teacher, Year 5
  • ”It’s not hard to work together because you can get things done much faster with others!” – Student, Year 3

Well done to everyone who was involved.
