The School: Crossley Street Primary

Having spent the last academic year, offering the students of Crossley Street a Development Programme, the Year 5 class have grown in their enterprise skills and have shown a keen awareness of their value in the classroom and in life beyond it. The trip to Victoria Leeds marked the final experience of Crossley Street’s various enterprise experiences and proved to be a showcase of the students’ engagement and development in Enterprise Education, hosted by the most recent and exciting retail development to the school’s neighbouring city centre.

The Business: Victoria Leeds

The new Victoria Leeds brings together Victoria Quarter and Victoria Gate to deliver the most vibrant new shopping scene and destination in Leeds city centre. Built by Hammerson PLC, one of the UK’s largest companies, it has built over 22 shopping centres, 18 retail parks and 15 luxury outlets.

The Challenge: Retail Revelations

Taking inspiration from the talk given by James Rogers and watching the video showing Victoria Leeds’ development from the ground to its full glory, the teams were keen to get started with developing their own retail centre. The conditions for the build were strict with the teams having to use their Problem Solving skills to establish a clear theme, culture and technological element to their designs. A focus of the day was to further improve the groups’ skill of Working in a Team thanks to different team members taking turns at Leading a section of the day’s challenge. Understanding that good leaders ask questions, each member took their role seriously and asked, “What do you think?”, “Do you agree?” and “How could we improve this?” to their fellow team members. The challenge concluded with them pitching their ideas to a panel of judges and showcasing the huge advances they have made over their year in their ability at Sharing Ideas.

The Results:

As the day ended, the words of one volunteer marked the resounding success of the trip and of the enterprise programme the Year 5 pupils have been engaged in, when it was fed back to the teams that the presentations were the best the volunteer had ever seen from the extensive work done with schools and Hammerson. The students showed they had grown to understand the value of Aiming High, Staying Positive and Using Imagination in the working environment as they offered dynamic and engaging designs and married this with equally creative and professional presentations. The teams had clearly been Listening and Understanding the brief and offered ideas that were plausible and made the volunteers remark upon the ease at which any one of the students could find a career in the world of retail and hospitality. Having done Crossley Street Primary proud, the students left Victoria Leeds with confidence and conviction that they had put in a remarkable day’s work!
