The School: Our Lady’s RC Sports College

Having worked with Enabling Enterprise since 2015, Our Lady’s RC Sports College enjoyed the success of the ‘A Day in Politics’ Challenge Day they offered their Year 9 students last year and embarked upon another year of Enterprise Education, with both a Challenge Day and an employer partner trip. The Year 9s will, yet again, enjoy ‘A Day in Politics’, bringing with them the enterprise skills they have exercised in their trip to PwC.

The Business: PwC, Manchester

PricewaterhouseCoopers is the world’s largest professional services firm, providing advice and support for businesses in anything from taxes to dealing with climate change. They have a wide range of clients, including, Debenhams, Tesco, Samsung, Sony and Barclays. They also oversee the balloting process for the Oscars!

The Challenge: Recruitment Race

Having met the PwC volunteers and learned of the diverse work undertaken at PwC, the teams were introduced to the role of a Human Resources Manager and the influences they have when recruiting staff, offering training and development, retaining staff and managing payroll and staff disputes. Today’s challenge proved to offer a taster of the role as the teams were encouraged to show their Leading, Listening Carefully and Problem Solving skills by CV sifting, interviewing and budget planning to select three candidates from six for the roles of Cleaner, Receptionist and Finance Manager. Deciding upon their salaries and employer’s benefits to ensure they secured their chosen candidate proved to be a test of their ability at Aiming High and Working in a Team. The teams negotiated different options and made their final decisions to lead them into presenting their choices to a panel of HR Directors.

The Results:

When faced with a panel of judges, the teams were set the final challenge of bringing all their hard work together in an articulate presentation. For the majority, this was their first experience of presenting, let alone to a panel of adults in a business environment. This proved, for some, to be a real test of character and skill, with every student having the conviction and determination to have their voice heard as they shared their candidate choices and reflected upon the skills they have learned throughout the course of the day. As expressed by the students in the final element of their presentations, Leading, Problem Solving and Staying Positive were the skills that they felt they had developed the most and as the day drew to a close, it was not just the two winning teams that walked away with a strong sense of achievement and a smile from ear to ear.

What they said:

  • “The fun and informative activities really engaged every child and gave the whole group a real insight into working life.” – Teacher, Our Lady’s RC Sports College
  • “In three words, inspiring, informative and engaging.” – Volunteer, PwC
  • “We have worked on our problem solving today by finding solutions and staying positive when we discovered things about the candidates and our budget that presented an issue. ” – Student, Our Lady’s RC Sports College

Thanks to PwC, Manchester, for such a great trip day, and to Year 9 from Our Lady’s RC Sports College for coming along.
