The School: Broadfields and Southwood Primaries

Barnet-based Broadfields Primary School are in their first year of working with Enabling Enterprise. Last month Year 6 kicked off their enterprise education programme with a successful Challenge Day called ‘Business in a Day’ where teams produced a range of souvenirs from scratch to celebrate their school and local community. Today, a lucky few from Year 5 and 6 came to the world of work to buddy up with students also in Year 5, from Southwood Primary School in Barking & Dagenham. Southwood being in their second year of their enterprise programme, were quick to make their newfound teammates feel welcome, especially as this financial challenge was going to put all their enterprise skills to the test.

The Business: First State Investments, London

First State Investments is a global asset management business with experience across a range of asset classes and specialist investment sectors. They manage investments on behalf of institutional investors and pension funds, wholesale distributors and platforms, financial advisers and their clients. They employ teams of investors who are specialists in their respective fields and set their own investment style. They have offices in London, Edinburgh, Paris, Frankfurt, Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, Jakarta, New York, Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland, Beijing and Shenzhen. Today volunteers Nicola, Katerina, Simone and Anthony were on hand to help the budding entrepreneurs hone in on Staying Positive and Problem Solving. Let’s find out how the teams did.

The Challenge: Trading Triumphs

The day started with professional introductions and some key information about First State Investments. After an insightful tour of the premises, the student teams got back to the room, ready to work for a client, investing their money in a fast-paced trading challenge supported by volunteers from First State Investments. The teams did their very best with their client’s money, listening to changes occurring on the “stock market” and reacting effectively. They had to factor in the global element of trading on the stock market, and use a range of skills to gather important information and make key decisions at various points throughout the day.

The Results:

Risk-taking was a key element in this challenge, and decision-making got trickier as the day unfolded. All teams manged to secure the best investments within tight deadlines, before presenting the financial return they had made in front of the adults from First State Investments, now turned judges. All students worked so hard in so little time that they were awarded a certificate for the skills they showed off throughout the day.

What they said:

  • “Children were able to experience something that would usually be out of reach for them; today they gained an understanding of trading, business and finance as well as teamworking skills and new aspirations.” – Teacher, Southwood Primary
  • “Days like these are the best!” – Volunteer, First State Investments
  • “EE did very well at encouraging the teams with the points system and giving them constructive feedback.” – Volunteer, First State Investments
  • “It’s impressive how they worked well together considering they didn’t know each other before this morning!” – Volunteer, First State Investments
  • “I’ll definitely do this again!” – Volunteer, First State Investments
  • “You can trust us because we’ve worked very hard on our team decisions so that we can give you the best possible results!” – Student, Broadfields Primary

Thanks to First State Investments for such a great trip day, and to Years 5 and 6 from Broadfields and Southwood Primaries for coming along.
