The School: Powell’s C of E Primary School

Enabling Enterprise has been working with teachers to develop the enterprise skills of pupils at Powell’s C of E Primary School, located in Cirencester, since 2012. Year 4 class, having recently completed their Food Glorious Food project were keen to show how they could transfer their enterprise skills to the workplace with a visit to Bromford.

The Business: Bromford, Cirencester

Bromford is a leading provider of affordable homes in the UK and owns around 26,000 properties. The company has been in the sector for over 50 years and has been recognised with numerous awards for its work to support the communities it serves.

The Challenge: Spread the Word

A chance to interview employees and take a tour of the offices enabled the 8 and 9 year olds to gain an insight into the work of Bromford, the jobs people do and the skills required. The children worked in teams to design a mascot for the organisation that would help young people learn about the work that Bromford does. Each team presented their mascot design to Bromford employees to round off a creative and collaborative challenge.

The Results:

The children shared ideas and used their imaginations brilliantly to design their mascots. All ensured that everyone’s ideas were incorporated and that everyone had responsibility for a task of their own. Fantastic problem solving was exercised when pressure arose, with teams staying positive and moving on quickly, aiming high to complete their work to the highest standard. The final presentations revealed six superb potential mascots that would have marketed Bromford well to a young audience. The children clearly listened carefully throughout the day to the information they received about the organisation and communicated their findings and creative designs enthusiastically.

What they said:

  • “It’s been so lovely to see even our quietest child shine today.” – Teacher, Powell’s Church of England Primary School
  • “I’m really impressed with the way the children have worked together and solved problems within their teams today. I’ve seen some disputes solved really maturely, the children have been really supportive of each other.” – Volunteer, Bromford
  • “I want to work here. I think it would be fun.” – Student, Year 4

Thanks to Bromford for such a great trip day, and to the Year 4 pupils from Powell’s for coming along.
