The School: Our Lady’s RC College

Having worked with Enabling Enterprise since 2015, Our Lady’s RC Sports College enjoyed the success of the ‘A Day in Politics’ Challenge Day they offered their Year 9 students last year and embarked upon another year of Enterprise Education, with both a Challenge Day and an employer partner trip. The Year 9s will, yet again, enjoy ‘A Day in Politics’, bringing with them the enterprise skills they have exercised in their trip to PwC last week.

The Challenge: A Day in Politics

Set for a fast-paced two hours session on A Day in Politics, groups of Year 9 students quickly warmed to the day’s challenge and most importantly the eight Enterprise Skills. A quick quiz that tested their Listening and Understanding and Presenting skills, as well as their political knowledge. The skills of Problem Solving and Staying Positive followed soon after as the teams began exploring political policies and deciding upon their own party’s. For the students keen to showcase their ability at Aiming High when Being Creative, the need to cement their party’s political image by creating promotional material was a particular highlight. And set with a tight deadline to get the rosettes and material completed, the teams showcased their ability at Working in a Team.

The Results:

Presenting their political party’s policies in a husting, brought the two-hours to a close and truly tested the teams’ ability to show their passion and confidence in their part and its manifesto. As the hustings concluded and the voting commenced, it was evident that the Year 9 students had found a political voice and a desire to sway their public. Whilst the votes were being calculated, reflections around the improvement of the students Presenting, Problem Solving and Working in a Team skills concluded that the students had certainly had an albeit short, but engaging and powerful experience, developing their Enterprise Skills over the course of their Day in Politics.

What they said:

  • “I worked with people I’ve never worked with. All I knew about politics was ‘who was who’. Now I know about the skills and what it takes to stand on stage, to achieve your goals. We came 2nd! ‘Just do it’ was our slogan.” – Student, Year 9
  • “The students did particularly well, standing in front of class and holding their audience with a well prepared, confident speeches. One student was physically shaking after the lesson, such adrenaline! She did well! – Teacher, Year 9

Well done to everyone who was involved.
