The School: Five Elms Primary

Five Elms Primary School in Barking and Dagenham are in their second year of working with Enabling Enterprise as a Partner School, striving to develop core enterprise skills in their pupils. They have been doing this not only through Lesson-Time Projects in school but have also taken the opportunity to stretch their students’ Problem Solving, Using Imagination and Working in a Team skills through whole-school Challenge Days. Today was an opportunity for some Year 6 students to show professionals from JLL what they had a learned over the last couple of years.

The Business: JLL, London

Jones Lang LaSalle Incorporated or JLL is a professional services and investment management company specialising in real estate. JLL employ more than 58,000 people in more than 1,000 locations in 80 countries. Alongside construction, development and property management, JLL also offers a range of financial services.

The Challenge: Brilliant Builds

After an introduction to our volunteers and a chance to find out more about how they use the enterprise skills in their roles at JLL, the children were taken on a fantastic tour of the office. The teams were then ready to take on the ‘Brilliant Builds’ enterprise challenge. The area of Bogsby had a brownfield site in the centre of the community. Working in a Team, the challenge was to redevelop the land and create a space that would benefit the local people and the environment.

The Results:

Teams created a plan of the buildings on the site, working against the clock but Aiming High. The day ended by a round of professional presentations from the students, who were Sharing Ideas not only with each other, but also with the 9 judges from JLL.

Those were really impressed with the students’ creativity, teamwork and confidence. The teams had thought carefully about the wants and needs of the community and put together a persuasive pitch explaining why their planned site was the most suitable for the community. Their Leading skills were tested throughout the day and all students learnt what it meant to be an effective leader.

What they said:

  • “Children were engaged and focused throughout. It was a fantastic opportunity for them to meet the volunteers and see how they use the skills.” – Teacher, Five Elms Primary
  • “I’ve been so impressed with the standard of skills in the students. It is clear the impact the programme back at school has on their challenge skills.” – Volunteer, JLL
  • “Staying positive was so important today! We had to meet the deadlines and it was tough, but we worked well as a team and picked each other when needed.” – Student, Five Elms Primary

Thanks to JLL for such a great trip day, and to Year 6 from Five Elms Primary for coming along.
