The School: Court Farm Primary School

Court Farm Primary School in Erdington, Birmingham have been working with Enabling Enterprise to develop students’ enterprise skills though Lesson-Time Projects and Challenge Days like ‘Operation Moonbase’, where they set up a brand new human colony on a distant planet.

Before this visit, Year 5 completed the ‘Active Minds’ Lesson-Time Project, where they designed and ran their very own exercise classes.

The Business: Colliers International, Birmingham

Colliers International is a leader in global real estate, offering comprehensive services to investors, property owners, tenants and developers around the world. A subsidiary of FirstService Corporation, Colliers has 502 offices worldwide and employs over 16,000 people.

The Challenge: Brilliant Builds

The Year 5 children from Court Farm were thrown into the world of property and development by being set the challenge to design a new site for the local community of Bogsby. Colliers volunteers supported each student team to unpick and break down this stretching challenge.

Thanks to a tour of the offices at Colliers Birmingham and the inspiring views over Brindley Place from the amazing 12th floor, the children were raring to use their imagination on this challenge. They had to consider a range of criteria such as sustainability, structure and the needs of the community when designing what would suitably go on their brownfield site.

Following research about what the residents of Bogsby wanted and needed in their town, the enterprising teams were then faced with the challenge of making the best group decisions before building a visual representation of their ideas.

The Results:

By Problem Solving and Working in a Team effectively, the Court Farm students were able to come up with a wide range of solutions to improve Bogsby and ensure that the residents were happy! The 10-year olds impressed their teachers and Colliers volunteers with their developments: they ensured their buildings had multiple functions and were Aiming High with creative thinking. Students then presented their work back to the Colliers volunteers who quizzed students about their designs and skills.

What they said:

  • “I believe the children have thoroughly enjoyed this experience which in turn will support their aspirations for the future. Thanks for helping Court Farm children expend their creativity!” – Teacher, Court Farm Primary School
  • “The structure of the day was excellent as was the support and guidance of the coaches from Colliers and the delivery from EE. Alongside engaging with new adults, students completed a varied range of tasks from the fun and simple to much more complex ones, allowing the children to use a variety of personal and non-personal skills. The main task was a great blend of the technical and the imaginative.” – Teacher, Court Farm Primary School
  • “Really well organised day, fantastic structure. All the kids were fully engaged and very well behaved. Days like this are important for young children to experience as they get an insight into the world of work.” – Volunteer, Colliers International
  • “Good, wholesome activity which seemed to have an overwhelmingly positive effect on the group. A great way to develop confidence amongst these children!” – Volunteer, Colliers International
  • “The best bit of the day was building our 3D model. I also enjoyed telling the adults all about it. The hardest part was agreeing as a team what buildings we would have and where would they go.” – Student, Court Farm Primary School

Thanks to Colliers International for such a fantastic trip day, and to Year 5 from Court Farm Primary School for coming along.
