The School: Whitehall Junior School

Whitehall Junior, in Hillingdon, has partnered with Enabling Enterprise for 3 years; with these Year 4 & 5 students becoming experts in the Enterprise Skills and how to apply them in a range of situations. This year has seen them take part in a ‘Crime Scene’ Challenge Day, and some of the students have already visited a range of different employers, building up their experiences outside the classroom too.

The Business: Buro Happold, London

BuroHappold Engineering is an international engineering consultancy operating in 23 locations worldwide, with over 50 partners and 1,800 employees including some of the world’s leading consulting engineers. For 40 years they’ve been building their reputation for delivering creative solutions for an ever changing world, taking on projects such as the London 2012 Olympic Park.

The Challenge: Brilliant Builds

The Year 4 & 5 children from Whitehall Junior were thrown into the world of engineering and development by being set the challenge to design a new site for the local community of Bogsby. Having had a tour of the offices of Buro Happold, the children knew they had to consider a range of criteria such as sustainability, structure and the needs of the community when designing what would go on their brownfield site. Following research about what the residents of Bogsby wanted and needed in their town, the enterprising teams then took on the challenge of making the best group decisions before building a visual representation of their ideas. By using Problem Solving skills and Working in a Team the Whitehall students were able to come up with a wide range of solutions to improve Bogsby and ensure that the residents were happy!

The Results:

The teams put in a lot of effort, Listening Carefully to one another, as well as learning from the volunteers and Sharing Ideas within their team. On the tour the children saw the 3D models that Buro Happold make when designing and planning out buildings, so they were Aiming High when it came to building their own designs! It was fantastic to see such thoughtfulness and creativity in their planning, with ideas for buildings that included fitness centres, community shared spaces, parks for children and pets, as well as necessities such as local primary schools and transport links. This all culminated in some very professional and slick presentations of their ideas, successfully impressing the volunteers as they judged the teams. Well done to all of the students for their hard work and fantastic teamwork skills!

What they said:

  • “The varied activities through the day have gone really well, and it has been good to see children coming out of their shells. I have seen the children develop their leadership skills which has been a big focus.” – Teacher, Whitehall Junior
  • “I have enjoyed seeing the children be inspired by a career in engineering and have seen them pick up soft skills that are vital in the workplace such as teamwork and leadership.” – Volunteer, Buro Happold
  • “I liked the bit where we built up our plan because our team did really well. I also liked when we went on the tour because of the 3D printer!” – Student, Year 5, Whitehall Junior
  • “I know what engineering is properly now and it’s made me think about my options for the future.” – Student, Year 5, Whitehall Junior

Thanks to Buro Happold for such a great trip day, and to Years 4 and 5 from Whitehall Junior for coming along.
