The School: Cranford Primary School

Cranford Primary, in the London borough of Hounslow, have been taking part in enterprise challenges for the past four years. Students have developed key skills such as Sharing Ideas and Staying Positive during their Lesson Time Projects and whole school Challenge Days including ‘Future Transport‘ in June.

Today saw Year 3 putting these skills to practise outside of the classroom alongside a team of professional volunteers from Hounslow Highways – taking on the Recruitment Race challenge!

The Business: Hounslow Highways, London

Hounslow Highways is the highways service provider working on behalf of the London Borough of Hounslow, responsible for maintaining the roads, pavements and street lighting across the borough, as well as providing a number of other key services including street cleansing, winter maintenance and enforcement.

Since their contract started, they have been working hard to improve the appearance and quality of Hounslow’s streets. In recent years, they have resurfaced more than 141km of roads, renewed over 206km of pavements and installed in excess of 14,483 new LED street lights. Today’s volunteers were on hand to support Cranford’s students throughout the day with all their expertise from their range of sectors.

The Challenge: Recruitment Race

The day started off with an extremely insightful tour of the premises, led by Mark at Hounslow Highways, where the students learnt a lot about the extensive range of vehicles, the eco-friendly ethos and the safety rules that Hounslow Highways practises. By exploring the different machinery, equipment and resources in the yard, the students gained a fuller under/standing of the work undertaken by Hounslow Highways, as well as the different roles employees play in their different jobs to ensure Hounslow Highways continues to be a successful service provider across the entire Borough.

The teams then set about their challenge: taking on the role Human Resources (HR) recruiters looking to fill three job vacancies at Hounslow Highways for cleaner, finance manager and receptionist positions. After spending some time thinking about what skills and attributes the perfect Hounslow Highways employee might have, the young professionals reviewed the specifics of the job descriptions to identify what exactly would be required for each role. After lunch, it was then time to watch and review a series of interviews: with six possible candidates for the three jobs, Problem Solving and Sharing Ideas skills would need to be sharp to make the smartest choices within each group.

The Results:

After supporting the students fantastically throughout the day, our volunteers had to shake off any working attachments and become judges for the final part of the challenge. Teams had a chance to practise their presentations before standing at the front and explaining their choices, using detailed reasoning about the candidates’ strengths and suitability to each role, as well as highlighting the skills they themselves have excelled in through this challenge. Our judges were particularly impressed by the high standard of the students’ presentation skills as well as the manner by which they came to their decisions throughout the day.

What they said:

  • “Today’s challenge was really fun, engaging and well-resourced, and offered nice opportunities to develop teamwork and group discussion abilities.” – Teacher, Cranford Primary School
  • “These teams showed great skill in working together by giving everyone a chance to speak and Share Ideas.” – Volunteer, Hounslow Highways
  • “We solved the problem of having six candidates for three jobs by breaking down the jobs so we understood them better.” – Student, Cranford Primary School

Thanks to Hounslow Highways for such a great trip day, and to Year 3 from Cranford Primary School for coming along.
