The School: Becontree Primary School

From Barking and Dagenham, Becontree Primary have been developing eight core enterprise skills in their students for the second year in a row with Enabling Enterprise. They have done this through whole-school Challenge Days like ‘Future Transport’ earlier this year, and Lesson-Time Projects such as ‘Postal Service’ all set up by Year 1 pupils. Today a group of Year 5 students were selected to stretch their enterprise skills outside of the classroom in the legal sector and take on the roles of professional negotiators.

The Business: Freshfields, London

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP is a leader among international law firms and is a member of the Magic Circle of elite British law firms. Founded in 1743, it is a multinational law firm head-quartered in London, providing business law advice of the highest quality throughout Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the US.

The Challenge: Ace Advocates

The teams began their day with an introduction to Freshfields followed by an insightful tour of the premises. This included the different departments and offices and a visit to a very special meeting room on the prestigious Clients’ floor, which had priceless views over London’s skyline. After learning about the differences between criminal law and civil law, the students considered how important Listening Carefully would be in order to achieve success in today’s challenge. They were then introduced to their clients and took on the role of aspiring lawyers, solicitors and negotiators for the day while Working in a Team to prepare their case.

The Results:

Throughout the whole challenge, students were Aiming High as they worked to tight deadlines. It was important for each team to use persuasive language when Sharing their Ideas during their tough negotiations. For the case of Mega Movies vs the Elmington Estae Residents, it was not easy to find a way forward where everyone was happy; lawyers of behalf of Top Trains and Wigglestock Birdwatchers struggled to reach a compromise at all! The adults still couldn’t resist awarding each team a special Enterprise Skill certificate at the end of the day since all the students demonstrated so much dedication!

What they said:

  • “I liked the focus on the EE Enterprise Skills, the children have a greater understanding of how to construct arguments and what a compromise is.” – Teacher, Becontree
  • “A day like this really pushes the boundaries on what they would usually experience and this exposure to the concept of a formal negotiation means they will be better able to see another point of view and transfer that skill to their everyday lives ” – Volunteer, Freshfields
  • “We really have become lawyers today, we need to make sure we site, act and behave like lawyers together” – Student, Becontree
  • “I think we have reached a good and fair compromise and that our clients will be happy” – Student, Becontree

Thanks to Freshfields for such a great trip day, and to Year 5 from Becontree Primary School for coming along.
