The School: Byron Court Primary School

Byron Court Primary School in Brent is an Enabling Enterprise Primary School. The school has been developing enterprise skills in students through various activities including a Challenge Day earlier this year, where the whole school, all the way from Early Years to Year 6, created a range of creative prototypes of ‘Future Transport‘ for the year 3030 through their Using Imagination and Aiming High enterprise skills. Year 5 then had the opportunity, the very next day, to develop their skills further by putting those to the test in the world of work.

The Business: Brewin Dolphin, London

Brewin Dolphin is one of the UK’s leading providers of personalised, discretionary wealth management services, offering investment management and financial planning services to meet the needs of investors and intermediaries. With origins dating back to the mid-18th century, they were one of the founding firms of the London Stock Exchange. They have 27 offices throughout the UK & Ireland and have a wealth of experience dealing with the ups and downs of investment markets – and helping money work harder for their clients. They were joined by employees from Travers Smith who are one of the UK’s leading corporate, financial and commercial law firms with over 200 lawyers, who are all committed to enterprising thinking and uncompromising quality. Travers Smith have 2 UK offices and one of their founding partners drafted the constitution for the first Stock Exchange in 1801.

The Challenge: Ace Advocates

Inspired by the volunteers from Travers Smith and Brewin Dolphin, teams formed a company of passionate solicitors, representing a client in a highly contentious negotiation task. Working against another team, the groups were Aiming High and Staying Positive when given a wide range of key information about their particular case and were Listening Carefully and Sharing Ideas to ensure they created a persuasive presentation to convince the judges of their argument. As a true test of Problem Solving and Working in a Team, Ace Advocates gave the students a chance to work together to find a solution for their client in a challenging disagreement.

The Results:

Working in a Team and Sharing Ideas were two key skills that the teams showed in abundance as they quickly united as a company of solicitors, working with students from different schools, and spent the day discussing the different factors important in their cases. Problem Solving skills were also clearly on display as the groups carefully considered the best outcome for their client and came to a number of successful negotiations. The judges’ decision was made even harder by the students’ creative language and powers of persuasion when they delivered their case against their opposing team. A day of true creativity and resilience.

What they said:

  • “A stimulating, challenging and really exciting day for all the children. Such a brilliant opportunity for them to interact with adults that isn’t their teacher or a figure in their home life” – Teacher, Byron Court Primary School
  • “Incredibly impressed with the students and amazed with what they have managed to achieve today” – Volunteer, Travers Smith
  • “I am really proud of our teams confidence. We presented in front of a lot of people and we got to share our ideas” – Student, Byron Court Primary

Thanks to Brewin Dolphin and Travers Smith for such a great trip day, and to Year 5s from Byron Court for coming along.
