The School: Heartlands High School

Heartlands High School from Haringey, have been working with Enabling Enterprise for two years. They have previously used different enterprise projects and visited a range of business partners. The school is committed to developing enterprise skills in their students through a rich and varied curriculum.

The Business: Aon, London

Aon is a global professional services firm that advises clients on the topics of risk and people. The company is a provider of risk management, insurance and reinsurance brokerage, human resource solutions and outsourcing services. It employs 65,000 people in 500 offices in more than 120 countries and has its headquarters in London. Until 2014, Aon was the principal partner and global shirt sponsor of the Premier League team Manchester United F.C.

The Challenge: Trading Triumphs

The Year 9 and 10 students were split into teams to take on the roles of traders for the day; practising their Problem Solving and Staying Positive skills, as they made fast paced trading decisions based on up-to-the-minute news for their client. After touring the office floors, the students worked together in their teams to analyse information from a number of sources before making their first trades.

The Results:

As the day went by at a pace, the traders got a real taste of what it would be like to work on a busy trading floor as they applied Problem Solving to make quick-fire decisions under pressure. This wasn’t an easy task but each group showed they were able to listen to important information to help them decide whether these 6 companies were going to remain successful or not.

By the end of their third trade, the students were ready to calculate their final return for Dr Taylor and use their Presenting skills to explain to a panel of Aon representatives, the challenges of their day. Each group gave a presentation that displayed confident public speaking and a sound understanding of the task, and the volunteers were suitably impressed!

What they said:

  • “A fantastic chance to allow the students to see the pathways into this industry and for them to meet professionals in the business.” – Teacher, Heartlands High
  • “I was really impressed with the students’ ability to stay positive throughout the day and be resilient.” – Volunteer, Aon
  • “It’s important for us to start thinking about where we’re heading after GCSE and A Levels, and how those skills can help us too.” – Student, Heartlands High

Thanks to AON for such a great trip day, and to Years 9 and 10 from Heartlands High School for coming along.
