The School: Gilberstone Primary School

Gilbertstone Primary School in South Yardley, Birmingham are committed to creating as many opportunities as possible for all of their pupils to develop essential enterprise skills. Through working in partnership with Enabling Enterprise, their pupils have developed their enterprise skills through a wide range of lesson-time projects, whole-school enterprise Challenge Days and exciting visits to businesses over the past few years.

The Business: Brewin Dolphin, Birmingham

Brewin Dolphin is one of the UK’s leading providers of personalised, discretionary wealth management services, offering investment management and financial planning services to investors and intermediaries. With origins dating back to the mid-18th century, they were one of the founding firms of the London Stock Exchange. They have 28 offices throughout the UK & Ireland and have a wealth of experience dealing with investment markets.

The Challenge: Trading Triumphs

Year 5 pupils from Gilbertstone Primary School were challenged to become stock market traders, take calculated risks, deal with set-backs and stay positive. Using their enterprise skills, the pupils decided which companies would provide the best return for their client Dr Taylor. Following each investment, breaking news updates from the stock market compelled the pupils to use their Problem Solving skills to review and update their trading decisions to maximise their clients’ return.

The Results:

The Gilberstone pupils embraced the challenge enthusiastically, applying all of their enterprise skills to make calculated, successful decisions throughout the day. The children developed insightful questions for our volunteers which enabled them to gain a good understanding of the world of stock market trading. Working well in their teams, pupils applied their Listening Carefully and Problem Solving skills effectively to make a series of trades that resulted in profits of several hundreds of thousands of pounds for their client Dr Taylor.

What they said:

  • “A fantastic EE day where the children thoroughly enjoyed using their problem solving skills to trade on the stock market! All of the children shared ideas effectively and demonstrated great team work skills throughout the day ” – Teacher, Gilbertstone Primary School
  • “A great day! The children were fantastic; they had such good questions and worked really well in their teams to achieve a great outcome for their client” – Volunteer, Brewin Dolphin
  • “I have enjoyed learning about the stock market – something we have never done before.” – Student, Gilbertstone Primary School

Thanks to Brewin Dolphin for such a great trip day, and to the Year 5 pupils and their teachers from Gilbertstone for coming along.
