The School: The Winns Primary School

The Winns Primary School is an Enabling Enterprise partner school in Waltham Forest. Students have been working on their enterprise skills in several Lesson-Time Projects in school. This year alone, they have also taken part in a couple of Challenge Days: as part of ‘A Day in Politics’ for example, students created their own political parties from scratch; and last month they also designed a video game based in their very own school. Keen to stretch their enterprise skills outside the classroom too, a group of 20 Year 4 students took today’s opportunity to put all of these skills to the test at a top British retailer.

The Business: Argos Leytonstone, London

Argos is a British catalogue retailer operating in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The company trades in 842 physical stores, as well as online. With around 800 million website visits a year, it is one of the largest high street retailers online in the United Kingdom.

The Challenge: Recruitment Race

The Year 6 students worked in teams to hone their ability in two of the key enterprise skills, Problem Solving and Listening Carefully. With the support of volunteers from Argos, the students learnt about the role of Human Resources and were set the task of recruiting new staff members to Argos in the fast paced and aptly named – Recruitment Race.

The Results:

The children learnt about the different roles involved in the recruitment sector, using their Problem Solving and Listening Carefully skills to identify key information. They negotiated effectively to nominate their choice of candidate for each vacancy. The day concluded with presentations from all teams who were able to clearly explain their decision to appoint each candidate. Teachers and volunteers were overwhelmed by the quality of the presentations and particularly noted how well the children had followed the 4S’s – Speak clearly, Seek eye contact, Smile and Stand still.

What they said:

  • “The children benefitted massively from working alongside the approachable and engaged volunteers from Argos.” – Teacher, The Winns Primary School
  • “I enjoyed watching the children’s confidence grow. The day did wonders for their self-esteem.” – Volunteer, Argos
  • “We got to know the volunteers, what they do in their jobs and what skills they used.” – Student, The Winns Primary School

Thanks to Argos, Leytonstone for such a great trip day, and to Years 4 from The Winns Primary School for coming along.
