The School: Oasis Academy Woodview

Oasis Academy Woodview in Ladywood, Birmingham have been working with Enabling Enterprise to develop students’ Enterprise Skills for the three last years. This group of Year 2 children have just finished the ‘Doing Good’ lesson-time project, which saw them fundraise over £150 for charity. There are now plans for the school to adopt a dog as result of this project!

The Business: Aston University

Aston is a leading UK university specialising in Business, Engineering and the Sciences. The university is situated on a 60-acre campus in the city centre of Birmingham. As well as being home to over 3,000 students, Aston University campus also has the following amenities: sports centres, swimming pool, gym, library, cafés, restaurants, shops, travel centre, hairdresser, health centre, dentist, places of worship, opticians, a bank and plenty of outside space.

Today’s visit was an excellent opportunity for Oasis Woodview’s budding entrepreneurs to find out what universities do, who they might meet there and stretch their Using Imagination and Sharing Ideas skills.

The Challenge: Imaginative Inventors

Students were set the challenge of designing unique, forward-thinking gadgets to make the lives of Student Ambassadors and University staff easier. They started out by conducting some crucial market research on an extremely informative tour of the beautiful Aston Campus. Teams were looking out and Listening Carefully to identify any challenges faced by students and staff. With problems identified, teams wasted no time in developing technological solutions with multiple functions to solve the problems they had researched.

The Results:

The Oasis Woodview teams took on three important problems: getting tired eyes because of reading so much, the challenge of remembering everything from lectures and how to speed up getting around such a vast campus. The 7-year old entrepreneurs displayed excellent Using Imagination skills and were able to combine several ideas into their final designs before creating beautiful posters in a limited time. At the end of the day, they aimed high when presenting their ideas during the Inventors’ Fair with inquisitive judges from Aston University.

What they said:

  • “A really well organised day! The have really enjoyed it and we are able to see progress on lots of the Enterprise Skills. It was great to see quieter students coming forward with so many ideas.” – Teacher, Oasis Academy Woodview
  • “I was so impressed at their creativity and how they were able support each other to work as a team! – Ambassador, Aston University
  • “My favourite part was sharing what we did with the adults at the end.” – Student, Oasis Academy Woodview

Thanks to Aston University for such a great trip day, and to Year 2 from Oasis Academy Woodview for coming along.
